Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Seattle WA 826 PM PST Tue Jan 18 2022

UPDATE. Light showers continuing to linger in the region this evening. Expect this activity to linger through much of the night before tapering off around daybreak. Minor adjustments to POPs and Wx this evening to reflect the current conditions.

PREV DISCUSSION. /issued 342 PM PST Tue Jan 18 2022/

SYNOPSIS . Weak upper level ridge ahead of approaching warm front will move through the area tonight. Warm front moving into the area later Wednesday followed by a cold front Thursday. Dry conditions Friday continuing through early next week as a high amplitude ridge rebuilds along the Coast. With light flow in the lower levels fog could be persistent Saturday into next week.

SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/ . Satellite imagery shows cloudy skies over Western Washington this afternoon. Doppler radar has a few showers left around the East Entrance to the Strait of Juan de Fuca. With the cloud cover temperatures have barely budged today and remain in the mid 40s.

Weak upper level ridge combined with a little warm advection ahead of the approaching warm front will take care of the remaining shower activity this evening. Light flow in the lower levels, plenty of low level moisture plus middle and high level clouds out ahead of the warm front will keep skies cloudy overnight. Temperatures will only drop a degree or two.

Short break in the action Wednesday morning with the rain out ahead of the warm front still offshore. Rain arriving on the coast in the afternoon with a chance of rain inland. Snow levels near 3500 feet Wednesday afternoon but precipitation will be slow to reach the Cascades. Highs Wednesday near 50.

Warm front moving into the area Wednesday night with rain spreading over Western Washington in the evening. Snow levels rising to 6000 to 7500 feet. Temperatures remaining in the mid to upper 40s.

Trailing cold front arrives Thursday keep the rain going with the front moving through late morning into the afternoon hours. Breezy just ahead and with the front but right now winds look to be below advisory criteria. Snow levels lowering but still remaining above pass levels, in the 4500 to 5500 foot range. Highs in the lower 50s.

Not much follow through behind the front Thursday night with upper level ridge building quickly offshore and drying northwesterly flow developing. Lows near 40.

Upper level ridge offshore continuing to build Friday and move east towards the Pacific Northwest. By Friday evening the ridge axis will be just offshore extending into British Columbia. Plenty of low level moisture around with post frontal onshore surface gradients going light in the afternoon keeping skies mostly cloudy. Highs near 50.

LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/ . Extended models and ensemble solutions locked into upper level ridge over Western Washington through the extended period. Light low level flow Saturday does not increase through the period as well. For now will stay with the night and morning fog scenario. The extended period of light low level flow could result in the fog becoming more persistent later in the period. Model ventilation indexes down in the very poor category Monday and Tuesday. Air stagnation could become a problem as well. Models continue to keep highs a little below normal, mostly in the mid to upper 40s. Felton

AVIATION . Scattered rain showers are ongoing along the coast and in through Puget Sound this afternoon. Activity will continue into this evening. Local drops in visibility and ceilings are possible through the afternoon and evening as the rain persists. Weak high pressure will build into the area tonight and last until Thursday when the next weather system is anticipated to move through the area. The air will remain moist, especially in the low levels with widespread MVFR cigs and local IFR conditions to continue. Patchy fog is possible as in the mornings through midweek as high pressure takes over for the middle part of the week.

KSEA . MVFR conditions at the terminal tonight with light -SHRA in the vicinity of the terminal. MVFR conditions persisting through the period with -RA spreading across the region from west to east Wednesday evening. Light southerly winds prevailing at speeds around or less than 5 kts.

Kristell/Pullin

MARINE . A stronger weather system will move across the area later Wednesday and Thursday, which will likely elevate conditions to that of at least small craft advisories across the water. High pressure will build over the region for the end of the week and through the weekend, as such, a return to foggy conditions across area waters is possible and reductions in visibility on the water is possible.

Kristell

HYDROLOGY . No river flooding expected in the next 7 days.

SEW WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. WA . None. PZ . None.
