Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Seattle WA 256 AM PDT Wed Oct 20 2021

SYNOPSIS. The first of a series fronts is currently moving through Western Washington this morning. While we will experience the weather from each of the fronts passing through the lows are all expected to track to our north. Rain and breezy winds will be the main impacts to Western Washington area, however there is the potential for some thunderstorms during the passage of a few of the cold fronts.

SHORT TERM /TODAY THROUGH FRIDAY/. A warm front associated with a low that is situated well offshore will continue to move northward through the area this morning. While widespread rain is expected the majority is expected to be fairly light. However, there is the slight chance of some embedded stronger cells of heavier rain that move through. These heavier rain showers would be most likely along the coast and the southern portion of the Olympic Peninsula, which corresponds to the area that has the greatest potential to see some thunderstorms this afternoon. Rain will taper off later this afternoon. As the warm front moves through southerly winds are expected to pick up. The coast and areas along the inland waters will experience the breeziest conditions with gusts up to 35 mph expected. For the more inland locations gusts of 15-25 mph are more probable.

The southern and eastern portions of the forecast area may experience a brief break in the weather before our next set of fronts move through. Temperatures will remain on the warm side of average ahead due to continued southerly flow behind the warm front. Highs in the low to mid 60s are expected throughout the W WA lowlands. Winds will once again pick up especially along the coast and along the Northern Interior Waters. Gusts up to 40 mph are likely. Winds inland are not expected to pick up until late Thursday with gusts 25-30 mph expected. While the coast is not expected to get much of a break from the rain between Wednesday and Thursday, the Interior will likely not see rain until late in the morning/early afternoon on Thursday.

The return to more seasonable temperatures is expected Friday with highs in the mid to upper 50s and lows in the upper 40s making a return. Weather will remain unsettled and wet as a trough moves inland. While conditions will remain showery for much of the area, the coast, South Sound and down the I5 corridor is forecasted to have enough instability that there is the potential for some thunderstorms or at least some heavier convective precipitation during the day.

LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/. Wet weather will continue through the long term as an upper level low continues to strengthen in the Gulf of Alaska. As a result, lows and their associated fronts will continue to move through the area. While we will remain wet, ensembles do show that most of the lows themselves will move inland well to our north. That said breezy conditions are expected during the passage of each of the fronts. Additionally, by the start of next week snow levels will be dropping down to potentially pass level. Confidence is much too low to give any good estimates on accumulations at this time.

AVIATION. Southerly flow aloft with increasing moisture ahead of a frontal system that will push onshore later this morning. Ceilings will lower to MVFR with rain as the front moves onshore this morning and then inland. In addition to the lower ceilings, gusty southerly surface winds will develop ahead of the front . especially coastal areas and across the North Interior. Widespread rain will transition to scattered showers behind the front this afternoon with ceilings returning to mainly VFR near or after 21Z.

KSEA . VFR ceilings will lower to MVFR levels as the front moves inland this morning around 14/15z and linger to around 20Z. Ceilings will improve later this afternoon to VFR levels. SW winds 8-10 knots gust to 15-20 knots by mid morning then ease, but remain southerly late in the afternoon.

MARINE. A weather system moving through area waters today with strengthening winds resulting in gales for the Coastal Waters and Small Craft Advisory winds for most other waters. Small Craft Advisory winds may continue into tonight for the coastal waters and northern inland, eastern Strait of Juan de Fuca area. Another stronger system will move through on Thursday for gales along the Coastal Waters and possibly for northern interior waters. In addition to winds, swell of 10 to 13 ft will affect the coastal waters and elevated seas in general will persist into late week as a series of vigorous fall frontal system impact the waters. Additional headlines expected through the weekend as an active weather pattern continues.

HYDROLOGY. A fairly active weather pattern over W WA for much of the forecast period will lead to increased flow in area rivers. While precip amounts are not expected to trigger flooding on most rivers, this will be an instance where the Skokomish River will need to be monitored. Current forecast has the Skok entering Action stage Thursday and as precip continues into the weekend, river levels may approach flood stage by the start of next week. Obviously, the amount of precip actually received is going to play a big role in how quickly river levels rise, but with few breaks expected once rain starts with the Wednesday system, the cumulative impact may result in flooding by the first half of next week. 18
