DISCUSSION. (This evening through Monday) Issued at 222 PM CST Tue Dec 7 2021

Summary: A roller coaster of temperatures with this with a couple of chances of snowfall.

A quick moving shortwave has skirted by the southern counties of our CWA this afternoon dropping a few light snow showers in its wake. Clouds will be on the increase overnight tonight, however, dropped the temperatures again given the amount of snowpack that is across the CWA. Expecting most areas will experience single digits with the northern half dropping below zero. That will probably be our last night with subzero temperatures as we start the roller coaster of temperatures for the remainder of the week and into the weekend.

An upper level disturbance ejects out over the plains and moves northeastward giving us our next shot of snow by Thursday morning. Models are coming together on a solution which appears that the snow will start in the afternoon as cold front moves in from the west setting up just outside our CWA by 18Z. This also coincides with the aforementioned shortwave traveling to northeastern MN and northwestern WI providing enough widespread omega to help create snowfall for most of the region. Accumulations appear rather light despite the PWAT values being near 0.5. Most locations will see about a half of an inch with higher amounts over south Cook County. This features can also be seen in WPC's Day 2 Probability graphic for snow greater than 2 inches. Seems reasonable given that the SFC temperature advection off the lake tends to decrease throughout the afternoon thereby giving a quick chance of heavier lake effect snow early on before decreasing in the afternoon.

Next, our attention is drawn to another low moving in from Colorado by the weekend. Models do seem in agreement on timing and location with the best chance of accumulating snow will be for our far southeastern counties late Saturday night. Accumulating precip values also seem in good agreement near a quarter of an inch with the NAM being the outlier at only at a tenth of an inch. This storm is still a few days away so although confidence is increasing, we will still have to wait to see how the models do over the next few runs.

After that system moves out an upper level ridge moves in calming the weather pattern a little bit before what could be our next chance of snow towards the end of next week.

AVIATION. (For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Wednesday evening) Issued at 536 PM CST Tue Dec 7 2021

MVFR Ceiling with occasional IFR ceiling is possible towards tomorrow morning. There is some indication that there could be low visibilities with the lowered ceilings, however, have kept them out of the forecast at this time. Winds will initially out of the southwest at less than 5 knots becoming light and variable overnight.

MARINE. Issued at 222 PM CST Tue Dec 7 2021

Winds will continue out of the west at around 10 to 15 knots with gusts to near 20 knots. By Wednesday morning, winds will switch around to the northwest and begin to decrease throughout the day. Expecting them to become around 5 knots with occasional gusts to near 10 knots.
