Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Seattle WA 346 PM PST Sun Jan 16 2022

SYNOPSIS. Weak upper level ridge over the area dissipating tonight. A pair of weak systems moving down from the northwest bringing a chance of rain to the area Monday and Tuesday. Stronger system Wednesday into Thursday. Upper level ridge building for the end of the week but light flow in the lower levels brings up the potential for widespread fog next weekend.

SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/. Satellite imagery shows a few places got out of the low clouds today. Biggest area of clearing was along the central coast. For the interior while visibility improved the inversion was strong enough to lock in the low clouds all day. Temperatures at 3 pm/23z were in the lower to mid 40s.

Upper level ridge over the area dissipating tonight. Light flow in the lower levels continuing keeping the low cloud deck intact. In addition middle level clouds out ahead of the next system spreading over the top of the low clouds overnight. Surface gradients are still light enough for some fog to form overnight. Lows will be in the mid 30s to lower 40s.

Weak system dropping down out of the northwest approaching Western Washington Monday afternoon. Increasing southerly surface gradients ahead of the system will scour out any remaining fog in the morning. Rain developing along the north coast with just a chance of rain elsewhere in the afternoon. Highs in the mid and upper 40s.

System moving through Western Washington Monday night. The system will be weakening as it moves through limiting rainfall amounts. Most interior locations will end up with a tenth of an inch or less. Higher amounts along the coast and the mountains. Snow levels will be slightly above the passes. Lows in the lower to mid 40s.

Upper level trough following the front Tuesday keeping a chance of rain in the forecast. This feature is also weak with snow levels only dropping down to around 4000 feet. Highs Tuesday again in the mid to upper 40s.

Tuesday night and Wednesday turning into a race to see which feature will develop the strongest. Upper level ridge trying to build offshore while a warm front moves over the top of the ridge. Models in good agreement that the warm front will be close enough to Western Washington Wednesday to keep a chance of rain in the forecast. Little change in the temperatures with the lows in the lower to mid 40s and the highs in the mid to upper 40s.

LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/. Operational runs and ensembles in good agreement with the warm front Wednesday night and a cold front moving through Western Washington Thursday. Upper level ridge building behind the front Friday with the ridge remaining in place through the weekend. This ridge is stronger than the one this weekend with 500 mb heights in the lower 580 dms by Saturday. While the stronger ridge will keep the weather dry it also creates a stronger low level inversion which given all the low level moisture in the area will probably lead to at least areas of night and morning fog. Model surface gradients are light offshore which also is good for more persistent fog. For now will go with areas of night and morning fog. Model blend forecast highs are splitting the difference between a mostly sunny day which would give highs in the lower 50s versus a mostly foggy day like Sunday which would give highs in the lower to mid 40s putting highs in the mid to upper 40s every day in the extended. Felton

AVIATION. Upper ridge over the area today with westerly flow aloft will flatten on Monday as weak frontal system approaches the region. Light surface winds continuing tonight will help stratus/fog stay in place across much of the lowlands with associated LIFR/IFR conditions. Increasing low level southerly winds and increasing high/mid level clouds ahead of front should scour most stratus/fog out by Monday afternoon.

KSEA . LIFR/IFR in stratus and fog persisting into Monday morning. Ceilings expected to lift to MVFR or perhaps VFR Monday afternoon. Surface winds light northerly becoming southerly overnight and rising to 5 to 10 knots Monday afternoon. 27

MARINE. Weak surface ridge over the area will give way on Monday as a weak front arrives. High pressure briefly rebuilds Tuesday into early Wednesday before another front arrives later Wednesday. This front has might produce advisory level winds across area waters, but could weaken significantly before it arrives. Surface ridging builds in more strongly late in the week with northerly or offshore flow developing. 27

HYDROLOGY. No river flooding forecast for the next 7 days.
