Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Seattle WA 325 AM PST Fri Jan 28 2022

SYNOPSIS. Upper level ridge over the area will shift southeast and weaken on Saturday. A front will move through the area Saturday night and Sunday for a return of rain and mountain snow. Wet weather will continue through early next week. High pressure may bring another break in the weather toward the latter half of the week.

SHORT TERM /TODAY THROUGH SUNDAY/. Western WA remains under high pressure with stagnant conditions due to light winds and very poor mixing. Temperatures are noticeably cooler this morning with most sites in the 20s. Fog coverage is less and mainly over the sound but will likely expand through the morning (although still not as extensive as the past few previous mornings). Low clouds and/or fog will be shallow and we should see afternoon sunbreaks once again.

The ridge begins to flatten and weaken as we move into the weekend. Saturday still looks dry but we will see increasing mid/high clouds through the day with a frontal system approaching. Rain then returns Saturday night as this frontal system drags through western WA. Wet weather continues into Sunday with a trailing upper level trough. This pattern change brings more snow in the mountains, including the Cascade passes. 33

LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/. We'll remain under moist N/NW flow into early next week for additional rain and mountain snow showers. High pressure (centered offshore) may shift inland again mid/late week for another break in the weather. 33

AVIATION. Upper ridge shifts eastward tonight with flow aloft becoming west to southwesterly during the day today. Fog has been generally inhibited by drier air as a result of yesterday's clearing and more easterly flow. Low level offshore flow continues near the surface and will generally stay light at all terminals. Areas of fog that do develop in through the rest of the morning hours will be widely scattered out by mid to late morning. Rain is expected to return to western Washington over the weekend for possible reductions in cigs and area visibilities.

KSEA . Fog has held off from developing at the terminal thanks to a widening gap between the temperature and dew point thanks to drier air near the surface. VFR conditions are prevailing. That said, areas of fog are nearby the terminal and there is still a chance of some moving overhead through the rest of the early morning hours. It will be hard to determine when or if this may occur, but will be monitored until a more widespread scattering will happen by mid morning. VFR conditions are expected after 18Z. Light and variable surface winds are expected, with a generally more south to southeasterly component expected throughout the day today. Rain and reductions in cigs is possible over the weekend.

Kristell

MARINE. Fog expected to linger in places over the interior waters again through early morning. A drier airmass has prevented widespread fog as seen over the last few days. Seas have eased to around 4 or 5 feet over the coastal waters. Winds will become southerly today and especially Saturday with the ridge weakening and the next front approaching, but are likely to remain below advisory criteria until the post-frontal westerlies arrive on Sunday. Seas will build behind the front, approaching 10 to 12 feet early next week.

Kristell

HYDROLOGY. No river flooding expected in the next 7 days.
