Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Seattle WA 909 AM PDT Thu Sep 23 2021

SYNOPSIS. High pressure builds into the area, resulting in drier and warmer weather into Saturday. The first of a series of weather systems will approach the area late Saturday. Expect unsettled weather through much of the first half of next week.

SHORT TERM /TODAY THROUGH SATURDAY/. An upper ridge is building into Western Washington today. Increasing northerly flow near the surface will help scour out the low clouds for most areas by early afternoon. High temperatures will be similar to those on Wednesday if not a degree or two warmer. The upper ridge axis shifts overhead tomorrow with thermally induced low pressure at the surface expanding northward along the coast. This will turn the low level flow weakly offshore. With wall to wall sunshine and said offshore flow, high temperatures on Friday will get a nice boost with highs from the upper 60s to upper 70s. The ridge flattens and a weak front approaches the region by Saturday evening, but not before a pleasant early autumn day for most Western Washington interior areas. We're still on track for large scale changes in the synoptic pattern for much of next week as we transition toward wet and unsettled conditions. No forecast updates planned this morning. 27

LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/. Rain will continue to move through the area late Saturday night/early Sunday morning. There is a bit of a shortwave disturbance associated with this system that may be enough to produce some convection offshore, but anything that forms will be rather weak as the atmosphere becomes stable aloft. Since we are now officially in autumn it is only appropriate that the next weather system approaches the same day as one leaves. This second system is on the stronger side and models are in agreement that it will bring widespread rain and high mountain snow to the area. Unsettled weather will remain in place until at least mid week. This unsettled weather pattern will keep showers in the area including the potential for some thunderstorms. Welcome to fall.

AVIATION. Upper level ridge offshore with northwesterly flow aloft today. Flow aloft becoming southwesterly Friday as ridge moves inland. In the lower levels, onshore flow today becoming light offshore tonight and Friday morning.

Ceilings aob 1000 feet with local visibility less than 1 mile in fog until 17z. Improving trend 17z-19z with mostly clear skies by 20z. Mostly clear skies continuing into Friday morning. Some locations in the thickest fog will see delays in improvement into the afternoon.

KSEA . Ceilings below 500 feet with visibility about 1 mile or less at times until 16-17z. Improving trend 16z-18z with clouds scattering out 19-20z. Mostly clear skies this afternoon through Friday morning. Light wind becoming northerly 4 to 8 knots this afternoon.

MARINE. High pressure offshore with lower pressure inland will keep flow onshore today. The flow will turn briefly offshore tonight and Friday morning before turning back onshore Friday afternoon.
