Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Duluth MN 1244 AM CDT Mon Sep 27 2021

DISCUSSION. (This evening through Saturday) Issued at 226 PM CDT Sun Sep 26 2021

Summary: High pressure will keep the Northland dry through Wednesday. Next opportunity for rain appears to be Wednesday night through Saturday.

A northwest flow aloft will keep high pressure locked in at the surface tonight through Monday night. After some weak cold air advection tonight, warm air advection follows Monday through Tuesday night. This will keep temps above normal.

Upper level ridging builds over the region Tuesday night, and remains over the area through Thursday night. Moisture is sparse until Wednesday night, when moisture from the Gulf of Mexico begins to arrive. The warm, moist air, will prevail through Saturday. The upper ridge moves east, allowing pieces of energy to drift over the region and introduce some periods of rain Wednesday night in the western portion of the forecast area, spreading eastward Thursday, and lingering through Saturday. Temps will be above normal.

Precipitable waters during this timeframe will be from 0.75 to around 1 inch. Instability is weak to non-existent precluding any mention of thunder. If there is any thunder, it may occur Wednesday evening. Some pockets of heavier rain may be found Friday night when the best forcing moves through the Northland.

AVIATION. (For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Monday night) Issued at 1244 AM CDT Mon Sep 27 2021

VFR conditions are expected through much of the TAF period. A ridge of high pressure building into the area will cause winds to become light and variable overnight to pick up out of the east/southeast around 15z tomorrow, but still less than 10kts. Lingering low level moisture, the light winds and clear skies may produce some fog at the more southern terminals. Have only included a TEMPO group with MVFR visibility values for now as guidance is not supporting any lower values.

MARINE. Issued at 1010 PM CDT Sun Sep 26 2021

Northeast winds have increased into the southwest tip of Lake Superior with sustained winds of 10-15knots as of 10pm, causing building waves of 1 to 3 feet. The winds will continue overnight and Monday with waves possibly building into the 2 to 4 feet range Monday morning into the Twin Ports and the outer Apostle Islands. Winds should diminish once again Monday night, then turn to the southwest on Tuesday.
