Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Juneau AK 415 PM AKST Sun Jan 16 2022

SHORT TERM. /Through Monday night/ . Tonight’s forecast challenge is whether or not the invading cold air will allow for some of the leftover rain showers to become snow showers.

Today, rain showers and fog have been popping up around the area. Viewing webcams around the area show that there are times of reduced visibility, but it would seem that as quickly as the fog moves in, it moves right back out. So have kept patchy fog in the forecast for tonight for several areas. As the cold air moves eastward, it should push the showers eastward out of the area, leaving behind clearing skies. But during that transition time, the leftover rain showers in the north could switch to snow showers, little to no snow accumulation is expected though.

Monday and Monday night should be clear to mostly clear and colder, with afternoon temps in the 20s to low 30s. Mid to upper 30s are more likely in the southern panhandle. As far as winds go, Lynn Canal could see some stronger northerly winds at 20 to 25 knots but by the late afternoon, winds around the panhandle will calm down so light winds are expected Monday night.

LONG TERM. The clearer skies give way to renewed cloud cover on Tuesday as another front starts approaching the panhandle. Am anticipating that this front, which largely arrive on Wednesday, will bring snow to the area before a changeover to rain happens as warm air surges northward with this system. Still not too worried about snow totals, though accumulating snow will be increasingly likely the further north one goes into the panhandle. The associated low will move into the N panhandle, contributing to continued onshore flow before being displaced by an atmospheric river.

This atmospheric river has the potential to be an impactful event. Operational runs have indicated that the bulk of the precipitation will fall in the central and northern panhandle. Significantly higher freezing levels will be in place. Between this and the plume of moisture, significant rainfall totals, and snow melt at higher elevations, is looking increasingly possible.
