Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Juneau AK 458 AM AKST Sun Jan 16 2022

SHORT TERM. /Through Sunday night/ . A shortwave trough moves south of the Panhandle today. With it, rain also moves through the panhandle. Snow levels between 1,000 to 3,000 feet combined with above freezing temperatures will allow precipitation to continue to fall as rain through the morning and into the afternoon. On the back side of this system cooler air will begin to filter into the panhandle causing temperatures to drop near freezing. Rain will be on a diminishing trend through the afternoon but as the last showers exit, a few snow showers could be possible this evening before we dry out all together.

That's right, a drying trend is on the way. Sunday night, clouds begin to decrease as a drier air mass moves over the panhandle. Temperatures will also be on a decline once again as cooler air from the interior funnels in and clear night skies allow for efficient cooling.

LONG TERM. /Monday through Thursday night/ . A broad area of high pressure expands over the AK Gulf and Panhandle through early Monday and will slowly shift east through Tuesday. This will bring in clearer skies, drier weather, and colder temperatures. Pressure gradient between Yukon high and inverted trough over the Panhandle will have some increased northerly winds at this time. Next system moves into the western gulf late Tueday into Wednesday. Still plenty of model spread on timing and track of this low. Getting GFS and ensembles moving the low further north and pushing in much more precip over the area through the end of the week. ECMWF has been shifting but still keeps main precip bands over the southern panhandle. Either way by the end of the week looking at another warm and wet weather pattern as ensemble 850 temperatures continue to rise. Due to the colder air that will be in place precip should start out as mostly snow before changing over to a mix or all rain. NBM 24 hour snow total probabilities keeping greater chances of snow totals less than 4 inches. So for now concerns of high snow event as low, but not out of the question.

. Extended Outlook . Signals are still pointing to strong southerly flow, warming temperatures, rising snow levels, and a possible atmospheric river impacting the panhandle late week into next weekend. Any snow at the onset of the event will likely be rain by Sunday for all but the highest elevations across the north. Snow levels across the south are modeled to be upwards of 5000 feet, some models suggest even higher than that. Ensembles are suggesting 3+ inches of rain Fri-Sun for portions of the panhandle. Given the deep snowpack, rising snow levels, and rain amounts, flooding may become a concern. Details will continue to be refined as the extended becomes less extended, so stay tuned.

AJK WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. PUBLIC . None. MARINE . Small Craft Advisory for PKZ022-033-041>043-051>053.
