Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Fairbanks AK 324 PM AKDT Fri Oct 15 2021

SYNOPSIS. Today will be another quiet day in Northern Alaska with widespread flurries or light snow, but very little accumulation. The quiet weather will continue for most areas over the weekend, with cloud cover and chances for snow diminishing. The exceptions to this will be gusty Alaska Range gap winds, and northerly or offshore winds along the West Coast from a strong low in Bering Sea.

DISCUSSION. Upper Levels and Analysis . Broad upper level troughing is still centered over Northern Alaska leading to widespread stratus and flurries or light snow across the forecast area. A subtle shortwave within this trough is moving north through the Central Interior, bringing accumulating snow of less than one inch through tonight. Models are in great agreement on how the overall pattern evolves the next few days, with the persistent trough beginning to gradually weaken and be pushed northeast by a strong stacked low crossing the Bering Sea into the Gulf of Alaska. Weak ridging will build over the Interior by Sunday in between these two systems. One model difference of note is on the exact track of the progged 967mb surface low, with some solutions having snow reach into the Scammon Bay area, while others keep the snow to the south. We opted to keep a chance of snow and blowing snow for the lower Yukon Delta.

Central and Eastern Interior . Mostly cloudy across the area through tonight, with areas of flurries or light snow, especially between Tanana and Fairbanks, where up to one inch of snow is possible. Clouds will begin to break up Saturday, with mostly clear skies expected Saturday night and Sunday. Southerly Alaska Range gap winds and the Tanana Valley Jet will kick up on Sunday, with gusts to around 30-40 mph expected. Overall, temperatures will remain fairly steady over the weekend, with highs in the low to mid 30s, and lows in the teens to 20s.

West Coast and Western Interior . Cloudy skies continue across most of the area, with snow showers through the Bering Strait and into Norton Sound, and areas of flurries inland. A strong low will track across the Bering Sea over the weekend, leading to gusty north winds through the Bering Strait, and gusty northeast to east winds along the West Coast south of the Bering Strait, late Saturday through Sunday. Snow associated with this system will only reach as far north as St Lawrence Island and the lower Yukon Delta, so this will primarily be a dry, somewhat windy storm for the West Coast. Along the north side of St Lawrence Island, elevated surf is possible late Saturday through Sunday. See Coastal Hazard section for more details. Expect highs in the low to mid 30s, and and lows in the teens to 20s, throughout the weekend.

North Slope and Brooks Range . Another mostly cloudy day across the area, with light snow and areas of fog along the Arctic Coast. The northeast 10 to 20 mph winds from Utqiagvik west will gradually weaken over the weekend, while 10 to 20 mph southwest offshore winds develop along the Beaufort Sea Coast. Otherwise, conditions will be quiet over the weekend, with highs in the teens to 20s, and lows in the single digits.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4 . Strong northerly winds will lead to elevated surf on the north side of St Lawrence Island Saturday evening through Sunday evening. Water levels and wave runup will be up to 1 to 1.5 feet above the normal high tide line during this time, so residents should move boats and other valuables off the beach. Another storm

Extended Forecast Days 4 to 7 . Models are in decent agreement on the overall pattern in the extended period, with active weather on the West Coast and North Slope, and drier, slightly warmer weather in the Interior. The first system to impact the West Coast will move in late Monday through Tuesday, with the potential for another storm towards the end of the week.

HYDROLOGY. Rivers are low and falling. Freeze up is slowly progressing in Northern Alaska.

Gale Warning for PKZ210.

Heavy Freezing Spray Warning for PKZ230-PKZ235-PKZ240-PKZ245- PKZ500.
