Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Fairbanks AK 1256 PM AKDT Sun Sep 26 2021

SYNOPSIS. The system that brought snowfall over much of the Central and Eastern Interior continues to weaken and move into Canada as weak high pressure over the Western Interior pushes east bringing clearing skies from west to east over the Central and Eastern Interior. Below normal temperatures continue over Northern Alaska for inland areas and at or slightly above normal for coastal areas with the warming influence of open water.

A low over the Southern Chukchi Sea with a cold front trailing south to the YK Delta continues to move east over the West Coast this afternoon, and will then move into the Western North Slope and Western Interior tonight, then weaken slowly in place from Mon into Tue. This is causing a mix of rain and snow over the West Coast this afternoon, and will produce snow tonight and Monday. Expect precipitation amounts of 0.25-0.50 over NW Alaska through and 2-3 inches of snow over NW Alaska tonight through Mon, with lesser amounts other areas of West Coast and Western Interior.

A cold front in Russia will approach the Bering Strait on Tuesday and bring snow to the Bering Strait on Tue.

DISCUSSION. Aloft . The long wave pattern consists of a deep trough that stretches from near the North Pole south over Central and Eastern Alaska into the Northeastern Gulf of Alaska. Several strong short waves dropping south on the back side of this trough will cause the long wave trough to retrograde to a position over the Bering Sea and Western Alaska by Wed, then progress east back over AK by next weekend.

A weak short wave trough that lies from Old Crow to Northway will continue to push east of the ALCAN Border tonight. Clouds and light snow are occuring east of this trough. Clouds continue to clear west of this trough.

A second short wave over the over the West Coast of AK will push east into the Western Interior late tonight and into Monday and then push further east and dissipating over the Central Interior on Tuesday. This will push the surface cold front east.

Surface . A 1008 mb low over the Western Brooks Range will continue to weaken as it pushes northeast onto the the western portions of the North Slope on Monday. Weak high pressure over the Western Interior continues to push clouds and light snow east out of the Central and Eastern Interior into Canada tonight and Monday. A 996 mb low just west of Wrangel Island will continue to push east as a very weak low pushes east through the Bering Strait on Monday. A 987 mb low in the Central Aleutians Monday morning will push east into the northern Gulf of Alaska on Tuesday.

A 1000 mb low moving east out of the Sea of Okhotsk on Tuesday will push into the Central Bering Sea on Wednesday deepening rapidly to around 976 mb or lower by Thursday. Models continue to present a wide range of tracks and strengths. Will need to closely monitor for the potential for elevated water levels and high surf especially south of the Bering Strait middle of this week.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4 . Models continue to indicate a low moving east out of the Sea of Okhotsk will interact with upper level energy moving south over the Bering Sea producing a very strong low over the Being Sea the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of this week. At this point guidance continues to produce a wide range of tracks and strengths for this system. Residents along the coast south of the Bering Strait should monitor the latest forecasts on the storm's track and strength and be prepared to secure property away from the beach. The Remnants of Super Typhoon Mindulle are forecast to move into the Aleutian Islands next weekend and into the Southern Bering Sea the beginning of the following week. Continue to monitor.
