Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Fairbanks AK 115 PM AKST Sun Jan 16 2022

SYNOPSIS. A low has moved inland and continues to move east across the southern Alaska this morning which has brought light snow across Central Interior. An Arctic front will stall across area from Mountain Village to Tanana to Fort Yukon bringing light snow into early this week.

DISCUSSION. The models are in generally good agreement with the shorter term. The Canadian model is handling the stronger winds across the Chukchi Sea coast. There is a shortwave ridge aloft over the Eastern Interior and an upper level trough continues to dig across the Bering Strait and Arctic. A 1034 mb surface high has shifted east across the high Arctic.

Central and Eastern Interior . Light snow spread across the Interior this morning with general light amounts across the greater Fairbanks ares, with 1-2" before ending this early evening. The big question for tonight will be how quickly will the snow and cloud cover will diminish across the area for best chances for viewing the aurora. Looks like cloud cover will slowly diminish northward overnight with best chances from Healy towards Salcha and Chicken. For the holiday weekend we will see another quick shortwave bring chances of light snow showers across upper Western and Central Interior near Upper Koyukuk areas on tomorrow into Tuesday. Expecting heaviest amounts of 1-2 inches from Ambler to Bettles when the Arctic front stall over the area. Over the Alaska Range, expect southerly light flow on Monday and then increase stronger southerly downslope flow on Tuesday with expecting a very weak Tanana Valley jet development. Expect up to 35 mph wind gusts in passes with strongest winds in Isabel Pass.

West Coast and Western Interior . Light snow is expected to develop along the Arctic front that on Monday into Tuesday with heaviest snow near Ambler towards Central Interior in Bettles. Expect 1-2 inches for the holiday. By Tuesday the arctic front will stall across the Yukon Valley with continued light accumulating snow. Colder air filters in behind the arctic front and temperatures will drop into the 10 to 20 below zero Tuesday morning. Withe stronger winds along the Bering Strait and colder air, there may be a concern potentially reaching wind chill temptress on St Lawrence Island with 40 below zero wind chills and Bering Strait. Something to monitor.

Arctic Coast and Brooks Range . Light snow will spread northward and eastward tonight into tomorrow across the the western Arctic Plain. This low will bring light accumulations with up to one inch as light accumulating snow spreads towards the eastern Beaufort coastline. The pressure gradient is rather weak, thus keeping the light winds which do not anticipate issues of blowing or drifting snow.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4 . None.

Extended Forecast Days 4-7 . While there is still some uncertainty, there is growing confidence within the models for more active weather period particularly on the west coast with potential snow events with various fronts moving northward. This pattern would also bring warmer southerly Chinook winds across the Interior.

AFG WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. Brisk Wind Advisory for PKZ210-PKZ220-PKZ225.
