Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 215 AM PDT Sat Apr 27 2024

SYNOPSIS
Mostly sunny and breezy conditions are in store today behind an exiting low pressure system followed by lighter winds Sunday. A dry weather pattern can be expected across our region through next week with breezy periods and temperatures holding near or above normal.

SHORT TERM
Today through Sunday.

Isolated showers moving down through southern Clark and Mohave counties early this morning will dissipate before sunrise as dry northwest flow overspreads the region on the back side of the exiting upper low. Isolated showers may linger over far northern Mohave County today, but the rest of our forecast area will be mostly sunny, breezy and warmer. North-northwest winds sustained 10- 15 mph with gusts 20-25 mph will be common across most of our region today in the wake of the system pulling away across the Four Corners and Rockies. Highs will rebound into the upper 70s to lower 80s across most of the desert zones. Winds will become light tonight and Sunday and temperatures will increase another 4-5 degrees allowing highs to climb into the lower 80s in Las Vegas which is near normal.

LONG TERM
Monday through next Saturday.

Dry westerly flow aloft will develop over the region Monday and Tuesday underneath a broad low pressure system over the northwest tier states with multiple shortwave rotating through. The latest medium range models indicate one of these disturbances will dig into northern Nevada and Utah Wednesday-Thursday which will push north winds down through our region accompanied by a slight cooling trend.
A return to a general zonal flow follows Friday into Saturday, although some ensembles indicate a long wave trough digging over California/Nevada by Saturday for increasing south-southwest winds.
Temperatures will fluctuate slightly through the week, climbing about 5 degrees above normal early in the week, dipping several degrees Wednesday-Thursday, then rebounding going into next weekend.

AVIATION
For Harry Reid...Breezy northwesterly winds will continue into the morning hours, picking up with 25 knot gusts shortly after sunrise. These gustier northwesterly winds will continue into the early afternoon before they dissipate. Winds will continue to maintain a northwesterly direction through sunset, when winds will become more westerly. During the overnight hours winds are expected to become light and shift to follow typical diurnal trends, which will continue into Sunday morning.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...The remaining Las Vegas Valley TAF sites will follow similar trends to KLAS with 25 to 30 knot northwesterly wind gusts picking up shortly after sunrise before dropping off during the afternoon hours and shifting to the west/west-northwest shortly after sunset. KBIH will favor a north-northwesterly direction with 15 to 25 knot wind gusts dropping off later this morning/early this afternoon. 25 to 30 knot westerly wind gusts will drop off later this morning at KDAG as winds become more west-northwesterly before picking back up and shifting back to the west shortly after sunset this evening. Breezy north-northwesterly winds will pick up shortly after sunrise for the Colorado River Valley TAF sites, with gusts around 15 - 25 knots continuing into the early evening hours.
