Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Diego CA 337 AM PDT Sat Apr 27 2024

SYNOPSIS
Weaker winds, brighter skies, and warmer weather is on the horizon for the upcoming week. Many areas will be near to slightly above average by Sunday as weak high pressure moves through the middle of the week. A trough of low pressure will form into parts of the Great Basin, that will provide weak offshore flow and further warming later in the week.

DISCUSSION
FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES...

The trough that impacted our region on Friday has pushed into the Four Corners region, leaving behind drier conditions with weaker winds this morning. Low clouds covering much of the inland and southern portions of the coastal basin will begin to thin out through the morning hours. Northwest flow aloft will keep temperatures at bay today, though a bit warmer than what we saw on Friday where many will be near 5 degrees below average. Though the trough axis has departed to the east, the large troughing pattern across the southwest will continue to bring an uptick in onshore flow. Winds across mountains and deserts will gust 25-40 MPH, slightly higher through the San Gorgonio Pass on Saturday afternoon and evening.

High pressure across the NE Pacific will slowly strengthen by Sunday, influencing our weather pattern through the middle of the week. This will shrink the marine layer, causing areas of low clouds and patchy fog mainly near the coast and far western valleys each night and morning. Temperatures Sunday through Wednesday will be near to slightly above average with 70s and 80s away from the coast with 90s appearing across the lower deserts.

Cluster analysis is not in fair agreement regarding the positioning of a trough of low pressure by Thursday and Friday.
Depending on how strong this trough pushes south across the intermountain west and Great Basin, will see how warm we become.
Offshore flow will push up temperatures west of the mountains slightly, which is indicated by NBM. Long range models continue to show various variations of our general weather pattern, much of which looks dry into next weekend.
