Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Fairbanks AK 152 AM AKDT Sat Apr 27 2024

SYNOPSIS
Isolated to scattered showers continue in the Interior with the greatest likelihood being in the higher terrain. The West Coast looks to partially clear from east to west with only a few rain showers possible. The Beaufort Sea Coast will have some lingering blowing snow, especially around Deadhorse and Point Thompson, but conditions will be improving through the day.

DISCUSSION

Upper Level Analysis...
A quiet pattern for Northern Alaska continues as there is still some weak ridging over the Interior, a 516 decameter low southwest of Kodiak and a weak trough east of Kaktovik. There are a few shortwaves which spread from Point Hope to Northway but they are weak.

West Coast and Western Interior...
The weather will be quiet outside of some stray showers in the higher terrain today. Skies will try to clear making for the nicest day of the week with temperatures in the upper 30s to near 40 along the coast and around 50 in the Interior. Partly sunny weather continues through at least Tuesday with little change in day to day temperatures.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Rinse and repeat with what we had on Friday. A few showers will be around the Interior, especially in the higher terrain. This will be the case tomorrow and Monday as well with the greatest chances being in the Alaska Range and Southeastern Interior. Otherwise, temperatures will be in the mid to upper 50s today for most of the Tanana Valley, and mid 40s in the Yukon Valley. Then they do cool a bit more tomorrow with highs in the low 50s around Fairbanks.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Some blowing snow still prevails along the coast with visibility less than a mile at times this morning around Point Thompson.
Winds will remain around 20 to 25 mph with gusts to 35 mph through tomorrow night, so blowing snow will remain in the area, but the worst conditions have ended. In the Brooks Range, weather will be tranquil with partly to mostly sunny skies and highs in the 30-40 degree range into next week.

Extended Forecast for Days 4-7...
There isn't a whole lot to speak of in the extended. One thing we are monitoring is the ECMWF and Canadian models have come into agreement on a low from the Arctic dropping south into the North Slope Tuesday morning, then along the West Coast on Wednesday.
This could bring a brief shot of much colder air and even a chance for snow in those areas, but with the GFS not on board, our confidence in this is not too high yet. Past that, there is a lot of uncertainty in the models, but the weather looks to remain mostly quiet through the latter portion of next week.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

FIRE WEATHER
Temperatures will be slightly cooling down this weekend with highs in the 50s in the Tanana Valley. Minimum Relative Humidity values look to bottom out around 30 to 40% today and tomorrow then try to lessen heading into next week. Minimum RH's may drop back into the teens and 20s along the Tanana Valley with the lowest being near Delta Junction. High temperatures during this time may warm back up a bit to near 60 degrees, but winds will not be a concern as we are not expecting any strong winds.

HYDROLOGY
River and lake ice continues to decay across the Interior. Use extreme caution if traveling on ice.
