national weather service key west fl

Discussion In the mid and upper levels(700-200 mb),latest
available model streamline analysis overlaid with satellite data
depicts a positively tilted middle and upper trough oriented from
north dakota southwest to southern california across the western
conus. Downstream and east of that, the center of a building warm
core summer like anticyclone is positioning itself over mid-
alabama with mid and upper ridging bulging northwards into the
upper great lakes and central ontario. South florida and the
florida keys are beneath the southeastern periphery of this ridge,
but another upper ridge is aligning itself from east of the
southeastern bahamas west to across the spine of cuba to the
yucatan channel. At the surface and in the lower to middle levels,
latest available marine and land surface observations and
analysis detail a 1020 mb ridge oriented from the west central
atlantic westward to southern georgia.

Currently As of 200 pm, skies are partly cloudy across the
islands and surrounding waters. Temperatures have reached the
middle to upper 80s thus far this afternoon, but dewpoints have
remained in the middle to upper 60s. C-man stations along the
florida reef are northeast to east at 15 to 20 knots but gusting
to between 20 and 25 knots. Island sensors are recording winds
near 15 mph or 15 to 20 mph with gusts between 20 and 25 mph.

Radar detects no precip echoes attm.

Short term Tonight thru Tuesday, including memorial day.

Weather pattern looks to be more typical of april than middle may
owing to the fact that a "precip prohibitive" type of deep
ridging that will remain well entrenched across the southeastern
united states including the keys thru at least Tuesday. 500 mb
heights of near 595 decameters will be bullseyed over northern
florida thru Tuesday, in association with the aforementioned
anticyclone. At the surface, ridging across northern florida will
will remain in place through the rest of the weekend, then slide
southwards during Monday, reaching south florida by Tuesday and
remaining in place through Wednesday. The only chance for any
measurable showers would occur well out into the florida straits,
on account of the depth of the dry air over the keys. But, despite
high temperatures with intense sunshine reaching close to 90,
near breezy to breezy conditions over the islands and the waters
will make it feel more temperate. But that being the case, marine
conditions will not be all that great with this type of mslp
gradient in place. Low temperatures each night will only slide
into the upper 70s to around 80 degrees.

Long term Tuesday night thru Friday, middle level ridging will
become slightly weaker, falling down to near 590 dm for the rest
of next week. Although this will still be indicative of strong
middle level ridging, the combination of the lighter surface
ridging in association with the surface boundary moving closer to
the keys and slightly higher moisture in the boundary layer will
allow for only slight chances for showers across the keys, which
is more normal for this time of year on account of stronger
mesoscale forcing typical at this time of year as we approach the
solstice. Highs near 90 and lows near 80 with rain chances at 10
or 20 percent thru these periods.

Marine Sca now in effect for increasing winds across all waters
tonight. Then for Saturday thru Sunday, scec conditions would
appear more likely across florida bay, the nearshore waters north
of the middle and lower florida keys, and the offshore gulf waters
20 to 60 nm west of mainland monroe county and S gulf of mexico
including rebecca shoal and dry tortugas areas, with sca
conditions continuing across the rest of the marine areas(hawk
channel and the florida straits). The stronger gradient will hold
in place across the straits Sunday night and an SCA should still
be in place, but no headlines or scas are in effect are expected
next week.

Aviation Vfr conditions expected across the terminals
overnight. Surface winds will average from 080-100 degrees aoa
13-15 knots with gusts between 18 and 25 knots thru tomorrow
morning.

There are five sources. 1) Documents and manuals from a variety of sources. These have not been checked for accuracy and in many cases have not even been read by anyone associated with L-36.com. I have no idea of they are useful or accurate, I leave that to the reader. 2) Articles others have written and submitted. These are not intended to be fact, they are my opinions. 4) Small programs that generate result presented on a web page. Like any computer program, these may and in some cases do have errors. Almost all of these also make simplifying assumptions so they are not totally accurate even if there are no errors. Please verify all results. 5) Weather information is from numerious of sources and is presented automatically. It is not checked for accuracy either by anyone at L-36.com or by the source which is typically the US Government. See the NOAA web site for their disclaimer. Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
