Synopsis for the middle texas coastal waters -
the small craft advisory remains in effect through Sunday morning in response to a persistent strong onshore flow across the marine zones with occasional gusts up to 35 knots possible. Winds may weaken slightly tonight, but will quickly ramp up by early Saturday with seas remaining elevated. A few showers and Thunderstorms have developed along the coast and nearshore waters which could persist through this evening as a weak disturbance tracks over the area. The strong onshore flow is expected to linger through Sunday night, leading to additional small craft advisory conditions. Winds will diminish Monday with weak to moderate onshore flow persisting through the upcoming week. Isolated to scattered showers and Thunderstorms are possible daily Sunday through the upcoming week.

New AVIATION

SHORT TERM
(Today through Saturday)
Issued at 236 AM CDT Fri Apr 26 2024

Key Messages:

- Moderate to high probability of Wind Advisory conditions across Victoria Crossroads Saturday afternoon.

- High risk of rip currents through Saturday evening.

A mid to upper level low pressure system will develop today over the Central Plains, with a few weak disturbances transitioning across the area. As this occurs, moisture will be on the rise with PWATs nearing 1.7-1.8 inches by the late morning into early afternoon hours. The combination of the passing disturbance and the plentiful available moisture will allow for a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms to exist (PoPs 20-25%) across the region. Rain chances will start off out west in the morning and then shift eastward during the afternoon. As the disturbance exists the area tonight and moisture availability slightly dwindles, drier conditions are anticipated through the rest of the short-term period.

Breezy to windy conditions will continue today through Saturday in response to a strong pressure gradient across the area with steep lapse rates. The potential for Wind Advisory conditions has lowered today, with less than a 35% probability of wind gusts to exceed 40 MPH this afternoon. Although no widespread Advisory conditions are expected today, cannot rule out these conditions briefly been met, especially across portions of the Coastal Bend and Victoria Crossroads. Now, for tomorrow, wind probabilities of exceeding Advisory criteria go above 80% over portions of the area during the afternoon. Therefore, an Advisory remains in the likely category.

The strong onshore flow and the arrival of long period swells (above 8-10 seconds) will maintain the risk of rip currents at High levels today through Saturday and probably even beyond. The additional concern will be for minor Coastal Flooding to also occur across the Gulf-facing beaches through the period. However, at this time observations have remained below Advisory criteria and it seems like the very long period swells haven't yet transitioned into the nearshores. With this in mind will hold off on issuing a Coastal Flood Advisory for this morning, but will keep on vigilant (high tide occurring at around 8 AM today). The probability of minor coastal flooding will increase for Saturday's high tide cycle, with PETSS forecasting tides nearing 1.7-1.8' above MSL at Port Aransas. Will pass on the issuance decision to the day-shift for further evaluation.

Finally, in terms of temperatures these will be increasingly warmer, with highs today in the upper 70s to mid 90s range, and in the lower 80s to upper 90s on Saturday. Overnight lows are only forecast to drop into the low to mid 70s tonight.

LONG TERM
(Saturday night through next Thursday)
Issued at 236 AM CDT Fri Apr 26 2024

Key Messages:

- Medium chance of wind advisory conditions Saturday night

- Low to medium chance of showers and thunderstorms Sunday through the end of the week.

Very little has changed in the long term forecast. Strong winds will persist Saturday night with Wind Advisory expected linger. A mid level low pressure system with an associated trough will moving across the Plains Sunday and lift toward the northeast. The surface boundary will lead to the development of showers and storms across Central Texas. As the trough swings through, showers and thunderstorms (20-50% chance) could move develop and move into our northern areas. A few of these storms could be strong to severe Sunday afternoon, mainly across the north and northwestern areas.
The Storm Prediction Center has included these areas in a Marginal Risk for severe weather.

A series of shortwaves moving across South Texas through the upcoming week will combine with PWATs ranging from 1.5-1.9" resulting in a 15-30% chance of showers and thunderstorms daily.
Models continue to struggle with Wed-Thu when it is possible a boundary could reach into the area bringing the potential for an MCS to move through South Texas. The 00Z ECMWF has backed off of this somewhat, but now the GFS has begun to indicate something developing during this time period lending credence to the previous ECMWF runs. Will continue with 15-30% chance for showers and thunderstorms during this time period, but we will definitely need to keep watching this.

A nearly zonal flow aloft will bring a steady stream of s/w's over South Texas through the work week. This will combine with a persistent onshore flow and abundant moisture with PWATs in the 1.5 to 1.9 inch range (99th percentile) to bring daily low end chances for showers and thunderstorms. The main inhibitor is the lack of low level focus. The operational 06z ECMWF is currently an outlier with regards to a slightly deeper trough forming over the eastern CONUS Wed-Thu, bringing a boundary into the region and a potential for a large MCS to sweep through the area. The 12z ECMWF still brings an MCS into the area but is less amplified with upper trough. The rest of the guidance including the EPS, GEFS and GEPS ensemble forecasts maintain a more zonal flow. Will carry low chances for PoPs at this time and continue to monitor.

With onshore flow advecting warm and moist air into the area, expect temperatures will be quite warm through the week with highs in the mid 80s to mid 90s. Low temperatures will remain warm as well, with lows in the 70s.

AVIATION
(12Z TAFS)
Issued at 634 AM CDT Fri Apr 26 2024

Mostly MVFR conditions will persist across area terminals through 14-15Z this morning, before lifting to VFR levels. A few showers and thunderstorms will be possible near area terminals today, but confidence in occurrence over one specific site is too low at this time to be included in the TAFs. VFR will continue through this evening, with a return to MVFR expected overnight. It will be breezy to windy today with gusts to 30-35 knots possible, especially over ALI/CRP/VCT sites. Winds will remain elevated through the cycle, even during the overnight hours.

MARINE
Issued at 236 AM CDT Fri Apr 26 2024

The Small Craft Advisory has been extended through Sunday morning in response to a persistent strong onshore flow across the marine zones. Winds may weaken slightly tonight, but will quickly ramp up by early Saturday with seas remaining elevated. A few showers and thunderstorms will be possible today as a weak disturbance tracks over the area.
