Synopsis - A tight pressure gradient between a series of lows over the southern plains and a surface high off the east coast will allow for a prolonged period of strong and gusty southerly winds. Sustained winds are likely to be near or above 20 knots through the weekend with gusts over 30 knots. This, along with building seas to as high as 10 feet offshore, will bring about a long duration small craft advisory conditions through the weekend. The onshore winds will decrease early next week as the high weakens off the east coast and no deep surface lows are expected to form over the southern plains.

New AVIATION

SHORT TERM
(Tonight through Sunday night)

Wx map shows an intensifying and nearly stacked surface low/mid to upper level shortwave over NE, a surface high over the NE U.S.
and a tight pressure gradient between the two features all the way to the Gulf. South winds of 20 mph with gusts near 30 mph continue over SE TX/SW LA, a little less elsewhere. Satellite shows mostly cloudy skies over the region, radar not showing any precipitation over our area. Further north across NE TX, a line of showers and thunderstorms expected to remain north of the region. Low end chances of showers and perhaps a thunderstorm (20% or less) in the forecast tonight.

Saturday, strong southerly winds will continue, with the ongoing Wind Advisory from 9 AM to 7 PM CDT. The Coastal Flood Advisory from 5 AM to 5 PM CDT was extended northward to include Southern Orange county and Southern Calcasieu parish. Due to the later times of high tide further north, the ending time was extended to 5 PM CDT. No significant precipitation expected Saturday through Sunday morning, as the main area of significant lift remains just to our Northwest. Elevated southerly winds likely to continue through Sunday, with wind and coastal flood advisories necessary once again.

By late Sunday afternoon through Sunday night, expect chances of showers and thunderstorms to increase across Southeast Texas and Central Louisiana, increasing to 50-70%. Much less chances expected further southeast over South Central Louisiana.

08/DML

LONG TERM
(Monday through next Thursday)

The beginning of next week is looking potentially wet and stormy as a front drifts into the region.

PWAT values are anticipated to increase into the 1.6 to 1.8 inch range across the region Monday ahead of the weak front while a short wave moves into the area. Lift from the incoming disturbance is expected to create widespread showers and storms, but mainly across the East TX Lakes across Cen LA with lesser chances toward the coast. With modest cape values some stronger storms may be possible, but the larger concern will be heavy rain as storms may be slow to move with and efficient rain producers.

Convection may linger into Tuesday, however ridging may return to the area by the middle of the week. Rain chances will decrease mid to late week, but isolated to low end scattered showers will be possible.

AVIATION
(00Z TAFS)
Issued at 633 PM CDT Fri Apr 26 2024

VFR to MVFR cigs and strong gusty winds will prevail through the TAF period. Cigs are currently a mix of conditions, but expect a gradual trend toward OVC and widespread MVFR cigs overnight.
Sustained winds generally between 15 and 20 KT with gusts as high as 25 to 30 KT will be possible the next couple of hours before diminishing slightly during the overnight hours. SE winds will strengthen again to 18-22 KT by mid to late Saturday morning with frequent gusts to 30+ KT by afternoon (slightly lower at AEX).
