AVIATION
(12Z TAFS)
Issued at 600 AM EDT Sat Apr 27 2024

Light showers will approach the SGJ terminal towards 12Z, with occasional MVFR conditions possible through around 16Z as these showers move onshore. These light showers will potentially impact the Duval County terminals through the early to mid- afternoon hours. We placed TEMPO groups for brief periods of MVFR ceilings for the Duval County terminals. A few brief showers could extend northward to SSI and may approach GNV on Saturday, but confidence was too low to indicate anything other than vicinity coverage at these terminals. Shower coverage and overall cloud cover should decrease towards sunset, with VFR conditions expected to resume by the early evening hours on Saturday. Periods of MVFR ceilings may redevelop after midnight at SGJ as another push of showers potentially moves onshore from the Atlantic waters. Easterly winds will quickly strengthen shortly after sunrise, with sustained speeds increasing to around 15 knots and gusty by 15Z, except 15-20 knots and gusty at SGJ, where occasional gusts to around 30 knots will be possible from the late morning through around sunset. These gusty easterly winds will be slow to subside after sunset, with speeds likely remaining sustained around 15 knots and gusty at SGJ on Saturday night.

SYNOPSIS
Issued at 425 AM EDT Sat Apr 27 2024

Early morning surface analysis depicts strong high pressure (1034 millibars) centered over New England and along the Mid-Atlantic coast, with this feature wedging down the southeastern seaboard.
Meanwhile, weak coastal troughing was situated to the south of this surface ridge across the near shore waters adjacent to northeast FL
Aloft
ridging was building over the U.S. eastern seaboard, while a large trough continues to blanket the western half of the nation. A potent shortwave trough progressing across the Upper Midwest has been deflected north-northeastward by the east coast ridge, with another potent shortwave was pivoting across the Desert Southwest. The aforementioned coastal trough was generating isolated showers over the northeast FL waters, with a few of these showers advecting onshore along the Flagler and St.
Johns County coastlines. Pockets of marine stratocumulus were advecting onshore and across the I-95 corridor, with mainly thin cirrus cloud cover spilling overtop of the ridge axis and increasing from west to east, with thicker cirrostratus clouds located just upstream from our area. Lower stratus ceilings have recently developed beneath this thin cirrus shield across portions of inland southeast GA. Breezy easterly winds were keeping temperatures in the lower 70s along the northeast FL coast at 08Z, while temperatures elsewhere remain in the 60s. Dewpoints were in the 60s area-wide.

NEAR TERM
(Today and Tonight)
Issued at 425 AM EDT Sat Apr 27 2024

Strong high pressure will continue to wedge down the southeastern seaboard today, with this feature then expected to gradually weaken beginning tonight as it slides southward from the Mid- Atlantic coast towards the North Carolina Outer Banks. Meanwhile, coastal troughing situated over the near shore waters adjacent to northeast FL will sharpen somewhat this morning before pushing onshore and dissipating this evening. Our local pressure gradient will continue to tighten today, with winds at locations along the northeast FL coast increasing to the 20-25 mph range by noon, with occasional gusts up to 35 mph possible at area beaches through this evening. Breezy conditions will prevail along the southeast GA coast, with speeds of 15-20 mph with occasional gusts up to 30 mph by the mid-morning hours spreading inland towards noon. The sharpening coastal trough will generate widely scattered showers over the Atlantic waters, with an uptick in coverage expected towards sunrise. This activity will continue to occasionally advect onshore, with mainly isolated showers expected for locations along and east of U.S. Highway 301 through the mid to late afternoon hours today. Multi-layered cloudiness will otherwise increase throughout our area today, with marine stratocumulus advecting onshore and cirrus gradually thickening from west to east, with some mid-level cloud cover also arriving this afternoon and evening. Windy and mostly cloudy conditions at coastal locations today should keep highs in the mid to upper 70s, with lower 80s forecast for locations west of the I-95 corridor, except mid 80s for portions of north central FL.

Ridging aloft over our area will begin to flatten tonight as another potent shortwave trough pivots from the Desert Southwest this morning, across the front range of the Rockies by this evening, and then accelerates northeastward towards the High Plains states overnight. High pressure along the Mid-Atlantic coast will begin to weaken tonight as it shifts southward, allowing our local pressure gradient to begin a loosening phase, albeit gradually. Breezy easterly winds will continue overnight at area beaches, while breezy conditions elsewhere around sunset diminishing overnight. Multi-layered cloudiness will continue to move overhead, which should keep the threat for fog in check overnight. Decoupling winds overnight should allow lows to cool to around 60 at most inland locations, while an onshore breeze keeps coastal lows in the upper 60s to around 70.

SHORT TERM
(Sunday through Monday night)
Issued at 425 AM EDT Sat Apr 27 2024

High pressure will shift southward across the Atlantic Ocean and gradually weaken Sunday into Monday. Easterly flow on Sunday shifts to southeasterly on Monday with winds around 10 mph and gusts of 15-20 mph. Prevailing subsidence will lead to mainly dry and warm conditions. Due to onshore flow, temperatures will have an east-west gradient with highs in the upper 70s along the coast to low/mid 80s further inland. Overnight lows will be in the upper 50s and 60s.

LONG TERM
(Tuesday through Friday)
Issued at 425 AM EDT Sat Apr 27 2024

Warm and mostly dry conditions prevail next work week as surface high pressure remains parked to our east and flow gradually shifts to southerly. A weakening front stalls just to the northwest on Tuesday but a few light showers may make their way into SE GA Tuesday night. Ridging aloft builds back over the SE US for mid- week continuing the dry-spell. The next potential for rain will be Friday into Saturday as the next front approaches the region.
Above normal temperatures expected with highs rising into the upper 80s/low 90s and overnight lows in the 60s.

MARINE
Issued at 425 AM EDT Sat Apr 27 2024

Strong high pressure centered along the New England and Mid- Atlantic coasts will continue to wedge down the southeastern seaboard through tonight, resulting in strengthening easterly winds this morning. Meanwhile, coastal troughing situated over the northeast FL waters will continue to occasionally generate showers over our local waters today. This feature will shift inland this evening as high pressure begins to gradually weaken as it shifts southward towards the North Carolina Outer Banks. Small Craft Advisory conditions are expected to continue offshore through Sunday morning, while Small Craft Advisory conditions expand to the near shore waters adjacent to northeast FL this afternoon and tonight. Small Craft should Exercise Caution through tonight if venturing into the near shore waters adjacent to southeast GA, where speeds of 15-20 knots will continue, with 3-5 foot seas today building to 4-6 feet on Sunday. Seas of 3-5 feet this morning over the near shore waters adjacent to northeast FL will build to 5-7 feet towards sunset, with these seas peaking overnight and then diminishing back to Caution levels of 4-6 feet on Sunday. Seas of 5-7 feet over the offshore waters will peak in the 6-8 foot range tonight, followed by seas falling back to Caution levels of 5-6 feet by Sunday afternoon.

Winds and seas will diminish by Sunday evening as high pressure becomes anchored off the southeastern seaboard early next week, followed by prevailing winds shifting to southerly towards midweek. Seas of 2-4 feet will prevail both near shore and offshore by Monday night.

Rip Currents: Strengthening easterly winds this morning will result in increasingly rough surf, with breakers building to the 4-5 foot range by late afternoon at the northeast FL beaches and 3-4 feet at the southeast GA beaches. Persistently windy conditions on Sunday will maintain this rough surf, and a high risk of rip currents is expected at all area beaches this weekend.
Decreasing winds and diminishing breakers will allow the risk to decrease to moderate by early in the upcoming week.

HYDROLOGY
Issued at 425 AM EDT Sat Apr 27 2024

Water levels along lower portions of the Santa Fe River have crested, but Moderate flooding near the Three Rivers Estates gauge will continue through early Sunday morning, with water levels then gradually falling, but remaining in minor flood throughout the upcoming week. Water levels near the gauge at Hildreth on the lower Santa Fe will also gradually subside, with minor flooding expected to continue through at least Tuesday morning. Otherwise, minor flooding will otherwise continue along most of the lower Suwannee River from around the gauge at Branford and points downstream through the weekend.
