UPDATE
Issued at 725 PM EDT Thu Mar 28 2024
No significant changes to the previous forecast appear necessary.
NEAR TERM
(Through Friday)
Issued at 252 PM EDT Thu Mar 28 2024
Cooler and drier air will continue to filter into the region tonight and tomorrow in the wake of yesterday's cold front. Lows tonight are forecast to drop into the low to mid 40s across most of the area. A few spots could get a little bit cooler if winds die down and strong radiational cooling is able to commence. Friday's weather should be about as good as it gets around here with highs in the mid 70s, low humidity, and sunny skies.
SHORT TERM
(Friday night through Saturday night)
Issued at 252 PM EDT Thu Mar 28 2024
A high pressure system moving into the southeast is expected to linger in the general area this upcoming weekend, bringing fairly dry weather to the region. There is going to be some upper level ridging to our west, which should flatten out around our area on Sunday. Friday night temperatures will go down to the upper 40s in the AL, GA, and FL counties, with coastal FL counties staying in the mid 50s. Winds will stay calm and blow from the southeast. High temperatures should be in the mid to upper 70s across all state counties on Saturday, with calm winds coming from the southwest and partially cloudy skies. Saturday night is forecasted to be warmer than Friday, with lows in the mid 50s, and coastal FL counties going up to the upper 50s.
LONG TERM
(Sunday through Wednesday)
Issued at 252 PM EDT Thu Mar 28 2024
Tranquil weather continues into early next week as an H5 ridge hangs out over the southeastern US. However, a robust shortwave rounding the base of the longwave H5 trough over the Intermountain West will slingshot towards the Great Lakes Monday afternoon. A surface low develops across the middle of the country and will lift northeast in tandem with the shortwave Monday afternoon into Tuesday morning. The trailing cold front is forecast to push through the area Tuesday night into Wednesday. Timing remains somewhat uncertain with a some guidance holding the front back until late Wednesday morning into the afternoon while others barrel the front through here Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. This caused rain chances to linger into Wednesday afternoon. A few storms are possible with the cold front and it's way too soon to rule out the possibility of stronger storms, so stay updated with the evolving forecast through the weekend into early next week.
Temperatures will remain on the milder side through Tuesday afternoon with widespread lower to middle 80s anticipated; while not explicitly forecast, there's a less than 10 percent chance of someone reaching the 90 degree mark for the first time this year on Tuesday ahead of the cold front. Temperatures then tumble back into the 70s for highs following the cold front. Overnight lows will moderate from the upper 50s to near 60 Sunday night to the middle 60s Monday night. Lows will be a bit more spread out from the middle 50s across SE AL to the middle 60s across the SE FL Big Bend Tuesday night, with some larger than normal uncertainty thanks to the timing of the cold front; if it's faster, lows will be cooler and warmer if the front is on the slower side. Lows then take a dip back into the 40s Wednesday night as high pressure slides in behind the front.
AVIATION
(06Z TAFS)
Issued at 115 AM EDT Fri Mar 29 2024
No major changes to the forecast as VFR conditions prevail over the TAF cycle. Winds will generally be light and under 10kt, with light and variable winds being possible tomorrow night as high pressure sits overhead.
MARINE
Issued at 252 PM EDT Thu Mar 28 2024
Conditions continue to improve this evening as high pressure moves into the northern Gulf of Mexico. Favorable conditions are expected to last through the weekend as winds turn more out of the southeast to south. A cold front will bring showers and thunderstorms by the middle of next week.
FIRE WEATHER
Issued at 252 PM EDT Thu Mar 28 2024
Elevated fire weather concerns exist on Friday afternoon due to minimum relative humidities in the 20-25% range for most of the area. Winds appear fairly light with high pressure overhead, and soils remain fairly moist. High dispersions will be possible both Saturday and Sunday due to a combination of high mixing heights and slightly breezy transport winds.
HYDROLOGY
Issued at 252 PM EDT Thu Mar 28 2024
A few rivers continue to rise through Action Stage, notably the Ochlockonee, Withlacoochee and Aucilla. The Ochlocknee at Concord may reach minor flood stage later this weekend into early next week.
Otherwise, all the others are expected to remain in Action Stage and lower through the weekend into early next week as rain chances remain near zero. The next chance for rain is with a cold front next Tuesday into Wednesday.
