(Now through Friday)
Issued at 511 AM CDT Thu Mar 28 2024
Northwesterly flow aloft becomes established this afternoon as a longwave trough slides over the Eastern US and into the western Atlantic. While down at the surface, a high pressure slowly slides eastward across the forecast area. This deeply subsident pattern will result in dry conditions and mostly sunny skies today and Friday. The biggest edit to this forecast package was to lower the dew points with minimum relative humidity values expected to drop to around 20-25% for most areas this afternoon. High temperatures today will reach into the lower 70s for most locations with overnight lows ranging from the lower 40s inland to the upper 40s near the coast. Temperatures on Friday will be a little warmer as the high pressure becomes situated off to our east and winds turn more southeasterly to southerly. Highs are expected to rise into the lower and middle 70s. A moderate risk of rip currents is expected today with a low risk following for this evening and Friday. /14
SHORT/LONG TERM...
(Friday night through Thursday)
Issued at 511 AM CDT Thu Mar 28 2024
Weak shortwave ridging aloft will develop and then persist over our area Friday night and through the weekend, becoming a little more pronounced on Monday. Surface high pressure centered over the area Friday night will shift east of the region over the weekend, but continue ridging west into our area into the early part of next week. This pattern will lead to dry and warm conditions Friday night through the weekend and into the early part of next week. Southerly flow begins to return by Friday evening as the surface high drifts east and eventually becomes centered over the western Atlantic off the Florida coast by Monday. The return flow will slowly moderate atmospheric moisture across the region, but with subsidence associated with the ridging aloft continuing no precipitation is expected through Monday. By Tuesday, the upper ridging moves east of our area and a surface cold front will be approaching from the west. This will provide an even deeper southwest to south flow across the region bringing even more moisture into the area, with PWAT's gradually rising above 1.0 inches by late Sunday into Monday and then up to around 1.5 inches as the front approaches and moves across the region Tuesday into Tuesday night. This frontal system will bring us our next chance for showers and thunderstorms, with PoPs highest in the Tuesday afternoon and Tuesday evening timeframe, when we will generally be looking at about a 30 to 50 percent chance of rain. By early Wednesday the front should be moving east of our area with rain chances drier and slightly cooler air moving back into the region from the west.
Temperatures steadily moderate Friday night through Tuesday.
Nighttime lows Friday night in the 40s and 50s climb into the mid and upper 60s by Monday night before cooling back down in the wake of the front into the 50s Tuesday night and 40s and 50s Wednesday night. Daytime highs Saturday should be in the mid to upper 70s, but mainly in the lower 80s Sunday through Tuesday (upper 70s at the coast). In the wake of the frontal passage, Wednesday and Thursday daytime highs will be slightly cooler, mainly in the 70s. DS/12
