Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Caribou ME 655 AM EDT Sat Jul 27 2024

SYNOPSIS
High pressure will build across the region through the weekend.
Weak low pressure tracks north into the Gulf of Maine on Monday and tracks north of Maine through Tuesday. A weak warm front lifts north through Maine on Wednesday.

NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/
Update...
Have updated to adjust for current conditions, mostly temperatures.

Previous Discussion...
Surface high pressure will build across the region through tonight. Aloft, an upper low develops near the Mid-Atlantic coast tonight. Expect patchy, mostly valley fog, early this morning then again later tonight. Could also have patchy fog along the Downeast coast later tonight. Otherwise, expect clear/mostly clear skies across the forecast area today through tonight. High temperatures today will range from around 80 to the lower 80s across much of the forecast area, with mid 70 to around 80 along the Downeast coast where onshore winds will develop. Low temperatures tonight will range from the mid to upper 50s across the forecast area.

SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/
Interesting pattern for the short term. On Sunday a 500mb ridge around 590dam will be over New England while a 500mb low with surface low developing over the Gulf Stream drifts north. This 500mb low is cut off from the overall westerlies so it gradually drifts north. Area wide expecting a generally sunny day with a touch of humidity with more high clouds across Downeast areas.
850mb temperatures are warming across Northern Maine in the area of +15C to +17C range so expect highs here in the mid to upper 80s with a couple 90F readings not out of the question. Across the Central Highlands and Downeast expecting low to mid 80s and 70s along the shoreline with S-SW winds areawide.

Sunday night the models are rather consistent although location and precip differences do exist with this low pushing north.
Surface low pressure tracks somewhere offshore or near Cape Cod with moisture advecting northward to the Downeast coast.
Expecting increasing cloud cover for the southern 1/2 of the CWA Temperatures falling back into 50s to around 60F.

Monday is unique with the low tracking north many models including their members (exception the CMC) result in dry air being entrained into the low which keeps POPs very low if not zero across the area. Mostly sunny skies north with partly sunny skies south closer to the disturbance. Will have to watch the trends if we might squeeze out some showers from this system with winds S-SE we might be able to have a few showers.
Otherwise some morning fog is expect with the moisture in the boundary layer. Once again in the afternoon the warmer 850mb temperatures will be across the north so expecting highs in the upper 80s to around 90F. Dew points will remain in the 60-65F range which should keep heat indices <93F as its just a touch humid. Downeast and Central Highlands can expect highs in the upper 70s to low 80s with dew points in the mid to upper 60s.

Monday night despite differences in placement the 500mb cutoff slowly drifts north as it opens to rejoin the westerlies. As this happens cannot rule out an isolated shower closer to the low so this means for western zones otherwise patchy fog develops. Temperatures will fall back into the upper 50s to low 60s.

LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/
We start the Long Term with the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) positive around +1SD and the Pacific North American Pattern (PNA) around +1.5SD. This within an El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) neutral pattern typically keeps large ridging over the Western United States and long wave troughing over the Eastern United States. Heading beyond into the first week of August the ensembles are heavily spread for both the NAO and PNA. This creates some uncertainty as we head into mid August but for the first week of August the overall ridging west and trof east seems plausible. This means we can expecting warm/humid conditions and multiple disturbances within the westerlies to provide some precipitation. This is consistent with the CPC 6-10 day outlooks of 80-95% chance of Above Normal temperatures and 35-40% chance of Above Normal precipitation.

Tuesday...likely the coolest day of the long term as we get rid of the 500mb low that is returning to the flow to our north.
Highs still in the 80-85F range with the warmest temps north.
Winds are generally south and may gust 10-15mph which will likely keep Downeast areas to Bangor in the upper 70s thanks to the cold Gulf of Maine waters. Afternoon instability with the cool pocket from the low may result in some thunderstorms with the chance POPs. Expect patchy to areas of fog to develop Tuesday night with temps only falling back into the low to mid 60s with increasing humidity, it will be a muggy night.

Wednesday...Increasingly muggy with dew points increasing to upper 60s north and low 70s across the southern 1/2 of the CWA
Weak warm front lifts northeast across the area with temperatures in the low to mid 80s. Stronger southerly flow with gusts to 20mph will keep Downeast areas in the 60s at the shore, 70s inland with 80F readings near Route 9. Expecting afternoon showers and thunderstorms with daytime heading generating instability.

Thursday...Warm, hazy and humid conditions expected with dew points increasing across the area to 70-75F range which will make for oppressive humidity. Temperatures look to range from 82-87F across the area with coolest at the shore with the seabreeze. Models generally suggest a cold front will approach so this is a decent potential for strong thunderstorms in the afternoon but will have to watch trends. In addition, will have to watch trends on potential for reaching near Heat Advisory level conditions.

Friday...Although there looks to be a "cold front" the airmass remains very warm and muggy with overall SW flow aloft.
Expecting the same conditions with hazy, warm and extremely muggy conditions. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms continue to be possible. Highs in the mid to upper 80s and dew points in the upper 60s to low 70s.

AVIATION /11Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/
NEAR TERM: Variable conditions with any patchy fog early this morning, then again later tonight. Otherwise, VFR today through tonight. Light and variable winds today through tonight.

SHORT TERM: Sunday...AM IFR/LIFR possible at BHB due to BR/FG.
Otherwise VFR all sites. S-SW winds 5-10kt.

Monday...VFR. S-SE winds 5-10kt.

Tuesday...AM IFR/LIFR possible at BHB & BGR due to BR/FG.
Otherwise VFR. Brief MVFR or lower in the PM with -SHRA/TS.
S winds 10-15kt.

Wednesday...AM IFR/LIFR possible at all sites due to BR/FG.
Otherwise VFR. Brief MVFR or lower in the PM with -SHRA/TS.
S-SSW winds 10-15kt.

MARINE
NEAR TERM: Winds/seas below small craft advisory levels today through tonight. Patchy fog later tonight.

SHORT TERM: Winds/seas look to remain below SCA conditions through midweek. However, a low pressure system tracking N into the Gulf of Maine may cause SE swells to reach SCA conditions over the Coastal Waters. Opted to raise seas 4-5ft over the waters 10-25nm offshore. Depending on how deep the low pressure becomes will determine if an SCA will be required. Otherwise 1-2ft on Sun into Mon AM then 2-4ft from Tue PM through Wed night. Patchy fog Sun and Mon may reduce vsby during the morning hours. Increasing moisture into next week will result in more widespread fog all day and chances of showers. Expecting vsby issues from Tue onward.
