Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Juneau AK 248 PM AKDT Thu Mar 28 2024
SHORT TERM
Extremely minor changes to the forecast going forward. Due to recent observations and a less than robust pressure gradient due to solar radiation, toned down marine winds, particularly in Lynn Canal before the southerly push on Friday.
Furthermore, increased winds during the onset of the front around Cross sound to better represent a minor tip jet. Finally, removed fog as lower dew points than expected will keep RH values below desired levels for fog development overnight.
Otherwise, enjoy the calm weather while it lasts.
LONG TERM
Overall, only minor changes were made to the long term period today. After the warm front moves through the area, onshore flow will continue across SE AK. Most of the heaviest precipitation for this system looks to remain to the west of Yakutat at this time. A ridge tries to build south of the panhandle which will shift the onshore flow temporarily before shifting to the east a low moves into the northern gulf coast area. As this low sets up, another warm front will move northward bringing more precipitation to the area for the start of next week. Current guidance looks to bring a weak atmospheric river into the panhandle. Right now, there is not much concern with this for a hydro perspective but will need to keep watching as conditions need to get closer. There is some concern with a mix of rain and snow for some areas across the northern panhandle with this system, but it will need to be monitored through the weekend. One factor that could go against seeing more of a mix as the increased sun angle has been allowing for more warming during the daytime.
AVIATION
VFR CIG and VIS flight conditions expected through the entire 24-hour TAF period for the Alaskan Panhandle. Low probability of any fog development tonight. SFC wind and LLWS values remain benign through the forecast period.
