Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Fairbanks AK 247 AM AKDT Thu Apr 25 2024

SYNOPSIS
Mostly quiet weather persists across much of Alaska today with the exception being a few rain and snow showers along the West coast, and blowing snow along the Central and Eastern Beaufort Sea Coast.

DISCUSSION
Upper Level Analysis...
At 500mb, a 543 decameter high is dominant and overspreads much of the state up to Wrangell Island. Out west, a weakening 498 decameter low continues to spin in the Central Bering Sea.
Otherwise, there are weak shortwaves in the Western Interior which are getting caught in the southeasterly flow of the high.

Surface Analysis...
A 1015mb high is stationed over the Interior from the Brooks Range to Southeast Alaska. This is promoting mostly clear and dry weather which will continue today. In Western Alaska, a front will linger with isolated to scattered rain showers from the Seward Peninsula to McGrath. Areas of fog will also be around and it may be dense at times, especially in the lower Yukon and Kuskokwim Valleys.

West Coast and Western Interior...
The main story is isolated to scattered rain showers from the Bering Strait to McGrath and areas of fog as a front lingers overhead. Temperatures will remain quite mild in the mid 30s to low 40s along the coast, and near 50 in the Interior. Otherwise, skies will try to break up as this front exits tomorrow, but the best chances for that will be in the Interior. Winds will be light and blowing offshore through this weekend.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Not much to speak of in the Interior as our stretch of above normal temperatures and pleasant weather continues today. Expect high temperatures ranging from the mid 50s to the mid 60s today with light winds. Temperatures look to drop slightly from Friday through the weekend as highs make it into the mid 50s in the Tanana Valley, and mid 40s towards the Yukon Valley and points north. Weak southerly gap winds are also expected to be around 15 to 20 mph in the Alaska Range passes today and tomorrow.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Areas of low stratus and fog continue to stay locked in along the North Slope. Blowing snow is already occurring in parts of the Central and Eastern Beaufort Sea Coast. Conditions will deteriorate this afternoon and evening as east winds increase to 25-35 mph with gusts to 45 mph. This will bring blizzard conditions to the area through Friday evening before improving overnight. Skies will try to clear this weekend as we get a drier airmass overhead, but temperatures will remain chilly in the single digits and teens north of the Brooks Range, and low to mid 30s in the Brooks Range.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

Extended Forecast for Days 4-7...
Ridging will persist over northern alaska but it will be weakening. This will provide slightly cooler temperatures which will be near or slightly below average for this time of the year.
It will also bring in the chance for more rain showers to develop, mainly over the higher terrain in the Interior, though any precipitation looks to be light and mostly unorganized.

FIRE WEATHER
Relative humidities will reach critical levels (25% or lower) Today and Friday across the Tanana Valley. The lowest RHs will be near and south of Delta Junction at around 15%.
South winds through Alaska Range passes will gust to around 25 mph early Thursday morning through Friday morning, with poor RH recovery expected in this area Thursday night. High temperatures will be in the mid to upper 50s near Delta Junction and in the low to mid 60s across the rest of the middle Tanana Valley.

HYDROLOGY
River and lake ice continues to decay across the Interior. Use extreme caution if traveling on ice.
