Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Fairbanks AK 205 AM AKDT Fri Mar 29 2024
SYNOPSIS
An active weather pattern is beginning as a strong low over the Eastern Bering Sea shifts into the YK Delta today and tonight, bringing wind and snow out west. A second stronger low will move into Bristol Bay and then inland across the Interior Saturday night and Sunday, bringing more snow to the Interior along with increasing winds. Heavy snow will occur over the S facing slopes of the AK Range with strong winds 50 to 80 mph with the second low. Expect gusty southwest winds over all parts of the Interior as the cold front shifts east Sunday.
DISCUSSION
Upper Levels and Analysis...
There is a weak upper level trough over the Interior, weakening and moving northeast. There is an "anchor" 507 dam upper level arctic low over the Gulf of Anadyr with a basal shortwave trough moving into the YK Delta, with heights around 513 dam. A deep upper trough extends to 30N over the NPAC south of the Bering Sea, with a large subtropical ridge to the east. At the surface, the main feature is the low moving into the Yk Delta, with the low center around 980 mb, currently south of Nunivak Island. There is a 1040 mb high over Banks Island with a trough of low pressure of about 1011 mb near Prudhoe Bay.
Model Discussion...
The models are in overall good agreement, but there remains track and speed discrepancy with the stronger second low on Saturday and Sunday as it moves into the Interior. The NAM is the fastest and strongest, ECMWF is slower and weaker and farther east, and the GFS is in the middle. The Canadian is also quite strong, about 5 mb deeper than the ECMWF. This forecast favors a slightly faster and stronger solution with a blend of models favored. This forecast increases winds across the Alaska Range to hurricane force for the second low.
Central and Eastern Interior...
A few flurries/light snow showers will continue this morning over the Interior and then taper off today. Temps warm again today to near 40 which will keep us above seasonal norms. Expect wind gusts to 50 to 50 mph over the Alaska Range through tonight, stronger over the Richardson Highway corridor. The gradient increases to 10-11 mb Saturday and Saturday night with winds increasing to near 70 mph over the Alaska Range. The low crosses into the Interior Saturday night and Sunday, bringing heavy snow to the S facing slopes of the Alaska Range and a mix of rain and snow to the Interior. Heavier snowfall will occur over the Dalton Highway corridor and to the S facing slopes of the Brooks Range with 5 to 7 inches of accumulation. White Mtns will see 2 to 5 inches, along with southwest winds gusting to 30 to 40 mph, which should create areas of blowing and drifting snow over higher elevation summits like Eagle Summit. Further south, expect a mix of rain/snow Saturday night changing to all snow on Sunday, with accumulations up to 2 inches. Winds will also become gusty from the southwest Sunday 15 to 30 mph in the valleys.
West Coast and Western Interior...
A low near Nunivak Island this morning will shift into the YK Delta and Lower Yukon late this morning, bringing snow and mixed precipitation to the area, then shifting north with all snow from the Seward Peninsula northward. Winds increase from the northeast to 15 to 30 mph, expect 35 to 50 mph over the Bering Coast and to Point Hope. Extensive blowing snow is expected along the coast beginning today and ramping up into the weekend. A second stronger low will move into the W Interior and will bring more snow and blowing snow, with accumulations with the second storm of 3 to 6 inches. Snow continues into Monday than a strong arctic cold front shifts through and dries it out Monday night.
North Slope and Brooks Range...
Light snow will continue into the morning from Prudhoe Bay east with some inland patchy fog. The pressure gradient and northeast winds will increase near Point Hope and will reach gale force by Saturday, with increasing easterly winds to gale force over the eastern Arctic. Expect blowing snow to be significant near Point Hope with the possibility of brief blizzard conditions at Kaktovik and Point Thompson Saturday night and Sunday. A deep low over the Interior shifts to the Brooks Range Saturday evening with increasing snowfall along the Brooks Range and over the arctic coast Sunday, with widespread snow totals of 2 to 5 inches by Monday.
Extended Forecast Days 4-7...
An arctic trough will shift east from the West Coast across the Interior Monday and Tuesday, briefly bringing colder temps to the Mainland. This is short-lived as a strong low is expected to move into the West Coast Tuesday night into Wednesday and then shift inland through the late week. There is a fair amount of uncertainty with this storm, but it looks like it will be tapping substantial moisture from the Pacific, so it may bring a myriad of impacts including possible heavy snow for the Interior. Stay tuned as there is a fair amount of uncertainty, but the signal is strong in the models that it will be stormy second half of next week.
Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.
