Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Lubbock TX 1023 PM CDT Fri Oct 15 2021

UPDATE. Have gone ahead and lowered temperatures for tonight for areas on the Caprock given current trends. Wind magnitudes have fallen off rather quickly and with clear skies overhead, temperatures have dropped rapidly since sunset, especially across the SW TX Panhandle and western South Plains where low 40s are already fairly widespread as of 03z (with Muleshoe already at 36F). The Freeze Warning will therefore continue across these areas, with these updates necessitating adding Hockley County to the Freeze Warning as well. No other changes made at this time to the ongoing forecast. /DWK

PREV DISCUSSION. /issued 640 PM CDT Fri Oct 15 2021/

AVIATION . VFR conditions will continue through the next 24 hours. Northerly winds will quickly slacken after dark this evening, becoming light and variable during the overnight hours as surface high pressure builds into the region.

PREV DISCUSSION . /issued 222 PM CDT Fri Oct 15 2021/

SHORT TERM . An upper low will continue to move away from the region today and tonight with upper level ridging beginning to move overhead resulting in height rises aloft. However, more importantly, a light freeze could occur tomorrow morning across the extreme southwestern Texas Panhandle and western South Plains. A 1030mb surface ridge will settle directly over the area on Saturday morning leading to the coolest morning so far this season. The aforementioned areas are most likely to see a freeze tomorrow morning and we are still roughly a week out from the average first freeze date for these areas. The surface ridge will move to the southeast tomorrow afternoon which will quickly bring winds back around to the southwest.

LONG TERM . Overall the next week will be quiet. Upper ridging will move eastward across the central CONUS Sunday through Monday and will allow temps to warm into the upper 70s/low 80s by Monday afternoon. A closed low is progged to follow behind the upper ridge on Tuesday/early Wednesday and push a cold front southward by sunrise Wednesday. Temperatures on Tuesday ahead of the front will reach into the mid/upper 80s before cooling back into the 70s Wednesday. Overnight lows behind the front will be relatively mild, low/upper 40s, as the airmass will be highly modified. Upper ridging will return to the region by late week allowing for another slow warmup.

LUB WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. Freeze Warning from 4 AM to 8 AM CDT Saturday for TXZ021-022-027- 028-033-034-039.
