Discussion for Newport/Morehead City, NC
MARINE... SHORT TERM /Monday/... As of 1100 Monday...Was able to drop the inland SCAs an hr earlier than previously scheduled. Bulk of the forecast in near term remains unchanged. Previous disco...Marine conditions continue to slowly improve this morning as cold front pushes further offshore and Canadian high pressure begins to build over area waters from the northwest. Regional observations still show ongoing Gales over much of the offshore waters and persistent SCA conditions for sounds and rivers in post-frontal northwesterly flow. Seas offshore range from 5-9 feet. Winds drop markedly by midday as high shifts further eastward, falling to around 10-15 kt by midday. There may be a brief uptick in winds tonight as a reinforcing frontal boundary swings across the waters, but SCA conditions are not anticipated. Seas fall below 6 feet by mid-afternoon and drop further to 3-4 feet by sunrise Tuesday. LONG TERM /Tuesday through Thursday/... As of 340 AM Monday... KEY MESSAGES - Confidence increasing regarding minor to moderate impacts from a coastal low mid week Boating conditions will steadily improve through Tue, then attention turns to the middle of the week /Wed and Thu/ as yet another notable weather system is forecast to impact the area, including the potential of a coastal low. This system will likely lead to at least moderate impacts due to elevated winds and seas. Of note, a higher magnitude event is on the table if the coastal low ends up deeper than currently forecast. Latest guidance indicates that a period of Gale Force northerly flow is expected on the backside of the departing coastal low Wed night into Thu with seas peaking at 5-9 ft. Winds decrease to NW 15-25 kt Thu into Fri with elevated seas of AOA 6 ft expected.
