MARINE... SHORT TERM /through Tonight/... As of 435 AM Wed...Southerly pre-frontal winds continue to increase this morning over area waters, with widespread 15-20 kt observations with gusts of 25-30 kt. Seas are building much more quickly than guidance would suggest, with wave heights over the central waters reaching 8-10 feet this hour. Forecast calls for an increase in winds through today as the pressure gradient is pinched further with the frontal passage. Main challenge is the strength of the southwesterly flow this morning owing to cool ocean temps in the 40s and 50s, which will inhibit mixing. The models that best handle these conditions (especially the Canadian) now do not show any appreciable Gales until the front crosses when colder air floods over area waters. A few gale force gusts are still probable for soundside waters, particularly close to land where more robust mixing will result in frequent gusts of 35-40 kt during the afternoon, but confidence is lower for coastal waters outside of the warmer Gulf Stream. For forecast continuity, kept all headlines in place but did push back the start time for all offshore Gales to 15z. Gales are more likely tonight in cooler, post-frontal northwesterly flow. LONG TERM /Thursday through Sunday/... As of 300 AM Tuesday... KEY MESSAGES 1) Weak coastal low to impact area waters Friday-Saturday FORECAST DETAILS High pressure builds over the area on Thursday, and this will support winds and seas laying down for a short time. Winds and seas will then modestly build Friday through Saturday as a weak coastal low moves northeast through the area. Widespread rain and reduced visibility will accompany the low as well. During this time, southeasterly winds will peak in the 15-25kt range, highest over the warmer waters adjacent to the Gulf Stream. A SCA may eventually be needed for a portion of the central waters, but it's far from a slam- dunk, especially given the weaker nature of the low forecast. Seas are forecast to build to 4-7ft in association with the coastal low. Winds and seas will then lay back down later Saturday into Sunday as the low pulls away from the area.
