Discussion for Wakefield, VA
MARINE... As of 255 PM EST Friday... 1036 mb high pressure is located NE of the area this afternoon. Meanwhile, weak low pressure is developing along a coastal trough over GA/SC. SE winds today have been a bit gusty over the Chesapeake Bay (especially S of New Point Comfort) and in the tidal rivers, with gusts to around 20 kt. Have issued a marine weather statement (as opposed to a SCA) through 5 PM to cover this threat as the duration is short and hi-res models show the winds decreasing some into this evening. Seas range from 2-3 ft, with waves in the bay 1-3 ft (highest S and at the mouth). The low pressure tracks NE along the Carolina coast tonight and crosses the waters early Saturday. SE winds increase quickly to 15- 25 kt after about ~9z across the southern waters and after ~12z across the northern waters. The probability of widespread gales remains very low, but a few models show the potential for a brief period of convectively-enhanced wind gusts over the coastal waters after sunrise Sat into the early aftn. Seas and waves also increase to 5-7 ft (4 ft nearshore) and 3-5 ft during this period, respectively. The elevated winds will be rather short duration and most areas should be sub-SCA (at least for winds) by 21 Sat-00z Sun. Other than some very minor timing adjustments, SCAs remain mostly unchanged from earlier. The Ches Bay SCA now drops off at 18z Sat. The only exception to this is the the mouth of the bay SCA, which goes through 00z Sun, where 4 ft waves are expected to linger. On the coastal waters, elevated seas >5 ft are forecast to continue through most of Sunday. Thus, the SCA remains in effect through 00z Mon for the ocean. Much lighter N-NE winds are forecast for Sunday with calmer seas. Uncertainty grows into next week with the potential for several low pressure systems to affect the region.
