Loos gauge "accuracy"

They didn't look very accurate to me until I found out that you have to do a little trick not covered in the instructions. Before that, I got readings at mid scale from two new Loos gauges that differed by 26% or more. See my write up HERE. Now my gauge agrees with what I know to be correct from the measurements discussed in the article.

Cockpit Repair

Olé

If you want to see how beautiful an L-36 can look, take a look at Olé. Although it carries #7, it was built much later as this number was reserved. I am not sure when in the series it was built but it wasn't 2 boats past mine as it is of the new layout with the shorter cockpit and larger area below. Take a look at some wonderful shots provided for us all to admire. Click on the thumbnail or HERE

Fleet Pages -- NEW

I am working on an index to pages for each boat in the L-36 fleet. Please take a look. Let me know if you want to change your boats page or add a page if one is not there. CLICK HERE to see the page.
Once everyone gets their page the way they want it, I will add this as a tab to the main index.

Winsome III

Hi Allen,
Ran across your great website by accident Just a little blurb to say WinsomeIII is alive and well, and will be sailing this year. Built in J Taylor's yard in Vancouver in 1958 for Ches Rickard, and now owned by Sarah And Mike. She has had an extensive amount of work; 12 years of our time, and is looking quite lovely..

Papoose 2009 Haulout

Here are some pictures from my April 2009 haulout at BMC I was happy to get the chance to talk to two of the owners while I was hauled out. Thanks to Steve Hutchinson for more great work on Papoose. Thanks also to BMC. A great yard!

Hull #10 owner gets advice from the list

Advice to the new owners of Hull #10 I had occasion to meet with the new owners of hull #10 on Papoose this weekend. It is a little bit apart and they wanted to see one together. It is an old style as is Papoose so it was useful for them to see a similar boat. As some of you know, the older cockpit is larger by 1 frame and the cabin is smaller. They have gotten many emails and I have documented them HERE Lots of good advice.

Cimdayak

From Chris Messano

Neet website, my friend jack tatum owned jo too back in the 80-s.I used to race against him with my lapworth 32. The lapworth 32 was built in 1951 and was hull #1 chapman built it before his partnership with kalajian. The boat was monel fastned and was part of my life for 16 years. the original name of the boat was dancer, but while i owned it it was 42nd street.(i think it still is) i truly miss the boat like a lost friend, so it was neet to go through your website and remember it.
regards, chris

From Odin Braathen

Friend of the site, Odin Braathen, writes us with some histroy on some of the boats.

In the 1963 Transpac, one L-36 participated name Jo Too owned by Frank Shelley and hailing from the Buccaneer Yacht Club. Tomorrow I will check the 1965 race.

In that era, Transpac Yacht Club required a season of racing to qualify the boat so as to not have "one-timers" participating.

HORIZON (Jo Too) also sailed in the 1965 Tranpac. BELLWEATHER sailed also, then owned by Tommy Pickard. Tommy later bought a Cal 40 which he also named BELLWEATHER. A third L-36 participated, YULETIDE, owned by George Yule.

If HORIZON is hull number 33, she cannot be constructed in 1963. Or, JO TOO is not HORIZON.

Regards, Odin

New Eventide Owner contacts L-36.com

In an email from Greg, the new owner: I spent a lot of time at your website before making the decision to buy Eventide and really appreciated all of the information you've compiled.

I am very happy with the start of my adventure with Eventide - she's an amazing boat with an amazing history. She still has the red, white, and blue spinnaker used for the Argentina race in 1959 aboard. I'm looking forward to continuing her sailing days. I've been sailing on the Bay once a week in the last month and I'm keeping her in the same slip in Berkeley. I am still poking around and learning as much as I can about all the work Bob Griffiths did through the years. I look forward to learning as much as I can about maintaining her from other owners of similar boats. She's my first wooden boat and much larger than the Cal-20's I've owned in the past so I have much to learn.

What a wonderful Picture and story Anyone know the hull number?

Wonderful article on Hull #49

Click one the picture to see this very complete article on the restoration of Hull #49 up in Alaska. This is a very interesting article and much credit to Walter for putting it together for us.

Note from Hull #27

Hull #27 has been renamed Seafeather long ago and is located in Burton on Vashon Iland washington. Extensively restored.
Owned by John and Diane Sweetman.
Picture on your server is Seafeather moored in South Sound off Penrose point. I have extensive photo selection of restoration including construction of new mast.

Naturally, being a wooden boat, restoration is not exactly complete as I have to now finish restoring the interior that I had long ago restored but had to take apart to replace ribs and refasten hull in various places.

I have just received a letter from the new owner of Nyon #34

Allen, I just found your site and I'm finding it a wealth of information. Thanks for putting it together and keeping it up to date. My wife Kyra and I bought Nyon in February, (as seen on the add on your site). We are gradually fixing her up with offshore voyaging as a long term goal. We moved aboard a few months ago and find her to be warm, dry, and generally comfortable. We keep her in Victoria's Inner Harbour. So far we have focused our refit on interior systems. We have a bunch of photos of details of the boat, but as it happens, we have very few of the whole boat and none of the boat under sail. We are hoping to get a bunch of the brightwork addressed in the spring. After we get her prettied up, we will send along some pictures. Attached are some
Swiftsure race results and some L36 pertinent excerpts from a book on the early years of Swiftsure. Also, there is a photo of Winsome III, taken from the same book. Rick Forbes
