Winch Service Manual for Barient No. 10 - 1968


1. Remove snap ring #8 using screwdriver or a small pointed object. (Use a spiral motion rather than pulling straight up.)
2. Simultaneously, left drum (#1) and cover (#9) from base (#2).
3. Remove cover (#9) from drum (#1).
4. Remove two pawls (#4) and two pawl springs (#5) from drum (#1).
NOTE: TO PROCEED FURTHER, BASE (#2) MUST BE REMOVED FROM DECK OR MAST.
5. Remove bearing (#5) from base (#2).
6. With a spiral motion, remove snap ring (#8) from bottom of base (#2).
7. Remove washer (#7).
8. Remove shaft (#3) from base (#2).
9. Remove two pawls (#4) and two pawl springs (#5) from base (#2).
10. Carefully wash pawls, springs, bearing, base, mainshaft, and inside of drum.
11. Lightly grease the inside of base (#2).
12. Assemble two pawls (#4) and two springs (#5) to base (#2), noting correct pawl position as shown on exploded drawing.
13. Oil assembled pawls (#4).
14. Assemble shaft (#3) into base (#2).
15. Assemble washer (#7) onto bottom of base (#2).
16. Assemble snap ring (#8) over washer (#7) seating securely into groove on shaft (#3).
17. Grease bearing (#6).
18. Assemble bearing (#6) onto base (#2).
19. Assemble two pawls (#4) and two springs (#5) to drum (#1) noting the correct position.
20. Assemble drum (#1) onto base (#2).
21. Oil assembled pawls (#4) on drum (#1).
22. Rotate drum (#1) to check freedom of movement.
23. Assemble cover (#9) over top of drum (#1).
24. Assemble snap ring (#8) over cover (#9) seating securely into groove on shaft (#3). (Use spiral motion as when removed rather than shoving straight down.)
