Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Honolulu HI 930 AM HST Sun Apr 18 2021
SYNOPSIS. Mostly dry weather will continue as trades weaken tonight and a land and sea breeze pattern develops Monday through Wednesday. Moderate to breezy trades will return on Thursday and continue through the weekend.
DISCUSSION.
The remnant band of stratocu that has been over the state for the last couple days is bringing mostly cloudy skies and a few windward showers to Molokai and Maui as it slowly dissipates. Otherwise, fair weather will continue through today thanks to modest easterly trades and dry low levels characterized by dewpoints hovering around 60 degrees.
The gradient is still forecast to diminish tonight into the midweek period as low pressure develops over the north-central Pacific. As winds weaken and veer to ESE overnight, onshore wind will bring showers to southeast sections of Big Island while also causing blocked flow and a further reduction to wind speeds over the smaller islands. As a result, land/sea breezes and some degree of cloudiness over inland areas can be expected each afternoon. Mid- level moisture approaching from the south will spread over the southern end of the state early Monday morning and the remainder of the forecast area Monday night into Tuesday. Forecast soundings indicate the subsequent weakening of the inversion will be countered by warm temperatures and poor lapse rates aloft thereby inhibiting any deeper convection. As a result, any inland shower activity Tuesday will remain isolated to scattered and mainly light. Model consensus continues to improve for the late week period when a remnant cold front is expected to stall just north of the islands allowing for a return to a moderate to breezy trade wind pattern.
AVIATION. VFR conditions prevail at all TAF sites and these conditions are expected to prevail through the day and on through the evening hours. Some brief MVFR conditions can be expected over windward slopes of all islands though VFR conditions are expected to prevail.
No AIRMETs in effect and none are expected.
MARINE.
No changes expected this morning to the marine forecast. A high pressure ridge to the north of the islands will maintain northeast to east trade wind pattern over the waters today. The ridge is expected to sink southward tonight, which will turn the winds to the southeast with a weakening trend. Winds will be weakest over the northern islands, where land and sea breezes could set up over along the coasts. A return of moderate to fresh easterly trades will be possible late Wednesday through the second half of the week.
No significant swells are expected through the week. Surf along north facing shores will hold steady through Monday due to a persistent short- to- medium period mix of north- northwest to north- northeast energy moving through. As this energy eases into Tuesday, a medium- period, moderate northwest swell from a nearby source should arrive and begin to build down the island chain Tuesday night through Wednesday. This will be a long-lived event that should hold into next weekend.
Surf along south facing shores will remain up into Monday as the Tasman swell that arrived Saturday moves through. A gradual downward trend is anticipated Tuesday through midweek. A similar south-southwest swell will be possible late in the week.
HFO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. None.
