Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Honolulu HI 345 PM HST Thu Jun 4 2020

SYNOPSIS. Breezy trade winds will continue through Friday, then gradually ease into early next week. Clouds and showers will favor windward and mountain areas each day, especially during the overnight and early morning hours.

DISCUSSION. No major changes to the forecast since this morning. Satellite derived precipitable water (PW) shows some drier air moving into the Big Island, and the afternoon sounding from Hilo does reflect that drier air. Despite the lower PW values upstream of the islands, there are several batches of clouds that could still bring some passing showers to the islands in the trade wind flow. One area is upstream of the Big Island and looks like it will be come onshore not long after sunset. Have adjusted windward Big Island PoPs and associated fields to account. Another area of clouds is upstream of the smaller islands and looks like it wouldn't move in until later tonight. Another larger area of clouds is further upstream and could impact the islands tomorrow.

Despite these areas, no significant rainfall totals are expected. The high pressure will remain to the northeast, with a ridge north of the islands. The high will start to move to the northeast later tomorrow, and the ridge will weaken some, allowing our trades to ease a bit. Currently the long range models show a new high building to the north as we head into the middle of next week, which could allow our trades to build again.

Throughout the weekend and into next week, look for passing clouds and showers to be carried in on the trades from time to time.

AVIATION. Moderate trade winds will continue through the forecast period. Windward and mountain areas will see the majority of shower activity with isol/tempo MVFR conditions due to low clouds and SHRA. AIRMET Tango is posted for tempo moderate turbulence leeward of all islands.

MARINE. Surf along south facing shores has decreased since yesterday, but a High Surf Advisory (HSA) remains in effect through tonight for south facing shores of all islands. After this swell drops overnight, surf is expected to be below advisory levels along all shores into the middle of next week. A moderate south swell is expected over the weekend, with another possible early next week. A small northwest swell will fade today, leaving surf flat along north facing shores. Very small surf along east facing shores will build slightly Friday as the upstream fetch of trade winds grows.

A surface ridge to the north will maintain locally strong trades over Hawaiian coastal waters through Friday. A Small Craft Advisory (SCA) is in effect for the windier waters around Maui and the Big Island, as well as the Kaiwi channel, through Friday. Locally strong winds will persist around the Big Island and Maui through the weekend, but winds will weaken and shift out of the southeast around Oahu and Kauai.

HFO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. High Surf Advisory until 6 AM HST Friday for Niihau-Kauai Windward-Kauai Leeward-Oahu South Shore-Waianae Coast-Molokai- Lanai Makai-Kahoolawe-Maui Leeward West-Maui Central Valley- Windward Haleakala-Leeward Haleakala-Kona-South Big Island-Big Island North and East.

Small Craft Advisory until 6 PM HST Friday for Kaiwi Channel- Maalaea Bay-Pailolo Channel-Alenuihaha Channel-Big Island Leeward Waters-Big Island Southeast Waters.

NOTE: East coast views moved to GEOS-16. They are experimental and not well supported by NOAA so they may not be correct so be warned. This change required redoing a large amount of the GOES code. If the image you are expecting is not showing, please let me know. You may need to use the EDIT function to update your location.

Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
