Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Honolulu HI 400 PM HST Sat Nov 28 2020

SYNOPSIS. Moderate to locally breezy northeast trade winds will prevail through the weekend, with an uptick of showers expected Sunday and Sunday night. Clouds and showers will favor windward and mauka areas with some brief downpours possible. Winds will become light Monday through mid week, with daytime sea breezes and overnight land breezes expected. Dry conditions will prevail through much of next week, with cool mornings and a few isolated showers over the island interiors each afternoon. Moderate trades and a more typical windward and mauka shower regime may return towards the end of the week.

DISCUSSION. At the surface, we have high pressure centered far northwest of the state and a surface trough located northeast of the state. The combination of the high and the surface trough is responsible for the more northerly trade winds and cooler weather. Latest visible satellite imagery are showing showers upstream of the state. For tonight, we should see light to moderate showers passing through windward areas with a few light showers across leeward areas.

For Sunday, an upper level trough swinging through will bring increasing showers across the state. The atmosphere will be fairly unstable but due to the limited moisture, the chances of heavy showers and thunderstorms are low, but still possible over parts of Maui and the Big Island. We have added slight chance of thunderstorms for Sunday afternoon and Sunday night for the eastern end of the state.

Starting Monday, the upper level trough should begin to move east of the state and we should a surface ridge move closer to the state. This will cause the winds to drop off and become light and variable throughout the state by Monday afternoon. The lingering trough, combined with onshore sea breezes may produce some brief downpours over the island interior Monday afternoon especially across the eastern end of the state. Light winds with dry conditions are expected by Monday night and through Wednesday, with cool mornings and a few isolated showers over island interiors during the afternoon. A trade wind pattern may return towards the end of the week.

AVIATION. Isolated moderate-to-heavy showers are ongoing over Leeward Big Island at present, though convective depth is struggling owing to the very dry airmass above the trade inversion. Nonetheless localized MVFR or even IFR will be possible within this activity until it diminishes around or shortly after sunset. Elsewhere, prevailing VFR is expected through the forecast period. A few transient episodes of MVFR over windward areas will remain possible, especially overnight, within any particularly organized clusters of clouds/showers. Isolated thunderstorms will be possible over Big Island during peak heating Sunday.

No AIRMETs are in effect.

MARINE. High pressure is weakening far north of the area resulting in lighter trade winds. These lighter winds will persist through Thursday.

The current small, short period northwest swell will linger through Sunday, then get reinforced by a new small northwest swell Sunday night and Monday.

A hurricane force low, far to the northwest of the state, will produce a very large swell that will impact the state. Long period forerunners will build during the day Tuesday. With swell period exceeding 20 seconds, there will be likely long lulls between sets creating the potential for sneaker waves. This swell will continue to build Tuesday night into Wednesday producing warning level surf along most north and west facing shores. Tides are currently running about half a foot above predicted levels, and high tide early Wednesday morning is predicted to be over 2 feet for many areas. The arrival of this swell along with the higher than normal tides, will further increase the possibility of runup on roadways and other low lying areas during the peak of this event. A Small Craft Advisory will also be needed as seas exceed 10 feet as early as Tuesday afternoon for waters near Kauai, then quickly spread to other exposed waters Tuesday night and Wednesday. This swell will then lower gradually Wednesday night through Friday.

Short period surf along east facing shores will drop off early next week as trade winds diminish. Some eastern shorelines with northern exposure may see some wrap around surf from the large northwest swell next week. Only background southerly swells are expected throughout the forecast period.

HFO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. None.

NOTE: East coast views moved to GEOS-16. They are experimental and not well supported by NOAA so they may not be correct so be warned. This change required redoing a large amount of the GOES code. If the image you are expecting is not showing, please let me know. You may need to use the EDIT function to update your location.

Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases.
