Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Honolulu HI 827 PM HST Fri May 29 2020

SYNOPSIS. Breezy trade winds with limited windward showers are expected through the weekend. An increase in trade wind showers is possible early next week as increased moisture rides in on the trades.

DISCUSSION. A ridge to the north of the islands will be replaced by a new high over the next 12 to 24 hours, and is expected to remain in place through the weekend. The high is then expected to move to the northeast, and remaining there through much of the new week. This will maintain a trade wind pattern over the islands, and there could be an uptick in the winds this weekend as the new high sets up.

Satellite derived precipitable water (PW) indicates a drier airmass upstream of the islands, so expect shower activity to be limited, and focused over the typical windward sides of the islands this weekend. The models are in good agreement with some leftover moisture from an old front riding in on the trades next week. This could increase shower activity Tuesday into Wednesday.

No changes to the forecast this evening, and not expecting to make any significant changes with the morning package.

AVIATION. The same weather pattern will be with us through this forecast period with high pressure to the northeast continuing to produce northeast trade winds. Most of Hawaii will be dry, with the only showers expected to continue to be over windward mauka areas. Some of these showers will produce low ceilings and visibilities over windward mauka areas. Any resultant MVFR conditions should be relatively brief and passing in nature, most likely not warranting an AIRMET for mountain obscuration. The rest of the state will see VFR conditions through Saturday.

No AIRMETs are currently in effect or anticipated through Saturday.

MARINE. A high north of the area will maintain moderate to fresh trade winds over Hawaiian coastal waters through the weekend. Wind speeds in the windy areas around the Big Island and Maui are just below the Small Craft Advisory (SCA) threshold, so only a small increase in wind speeds would require the issuance of a new SCA. The trades will weaken Monday as the high moves off to the northeast. Winds will strengthen again over the second half of next week as the high rebuilds.

Swells from the southern hemisphere will maintain moderate surf along south facing shores through the weekend. A large south swell building early next week could produce surf above the High Surf Advisory (HSA) level by Tuesday evening. Surf from this swell is expected to peak Wednesday, then slowly subside through next Friday.

Surf will remain well below HSA levels along other shores. A small north swell will build Saturday, then fade out on Sunday. A small northwest swell is expected through mid-week. Surf along east facing shores will remain small through the middle of next week, then gradually build late in the week.

HFO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. None.

Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases.
