Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Honolulu HI 402 AM HST Fri Dec 6 2019

SYNOPSIS. Thick layered clouds, bringing clouds and light to moderate rain to the region, will clear from west to east throughout today and into tonight as an upper level feature moves to the east. In its wake, high pressure to the north will allow moderate trades to filter back in, along with clouds and showers over windward areas. Light winds and drier conditions are expected over the weekend, with more clouds over interior parts of the islands during the afternoon hours.

DISCUSSION. No significant changes to the forecast this morning. Did make some tweaks to the Sky grids for the first 36 hours or so, but no significant changes.

The upper level shortwave continues to move over the region, with the bulk of the showers over Maui County and the Oahu this morning. The trailing end is over Kauai. Anticipating improving conditions over Kauai this morning, spreading to Oahu by this afternoon and to Maui later tonight.

Winds at the Big Island summits did drop a little overnight, as expected, but have already rebounded to advisory levels. Summits winds are expected to strengthen today as the upper level shortwave swings through. The current Wind Advisory is through 6pm, but will monitor the situation in the event it needs to be extended. The main batch of clouds and showers is just starting to moving over the northern portion of the Big Island this morning. While the summits have received some bouts of snowfall overnight, expect a more widespread area will likely move over the summits in the next couple of hours. The Winter Weather Warning continues until 6pm.

The above mentioned upper level short-wave trough should swing out of the area by tonight, allowing for improving conditions in the form of fewer clouds and showers. However a weak ridge over the islands will keep light winds over the region, which will also likely mean some land and sea breezes.

A weakening front is expected to approach from the north, dissipating as it stalls near Kauai and Oahu late Sunday into Monday. A high pressure system north of the region will support a brief return of trade winds Sunday into Tuesday, with front remnants helping to boost trade wind shower activity.

Another front approaching during the middle of next week could weaken winds again, and current guidance shows this front could bring strong and cool northeast winds behind it. The GFS is a little faster with the fronts arrival, but the ECMWF bring more rain to the region. Have trended the end of the forecast towards the GFS solution for now, but will be monitoring future runs to nail down the details.

AVIATION. A quick-moving upper-level trough is passing over Hawaii. There has been stratiform showers from Kauai to Maui poised to be over the Big Island soon. Ceilings recently started getting low on Lanai and Maui so AIRMET Sierra has been posted for mountain obscuration on those islands. The AIRMET may need to be expanded for other areas, so will continue to monitor and it the need arises, issue another AIRMET accordingly. We are already beginning to see the end of the shower activity move into coastal waters just northwest of Kauai.

Icing is another concern with the thick nature of these clouds. Issued an AIRMET for icing from the freezing layer at 14Kft to FL220. This is moderate icing over all islands and we will start canceling these for each island as the showers move to the southeast.

Turbulence is also possible over the island but will hold off on issuing an AIRMET for upper level turbulence until we actually see the need for it. We have only had a few reports of light turbulence thus far and the models are dissipating the intensity of the turbulence over Hawaii for the next several hours.

MARINE. High pressure far north of the islands will maintain moderate trade winds, but expect a downward trend starting later today and into tonight.

A trough moving overhead from the west will induce showers across the state through the day. A slight chance of thunderstorms is in the forecast northeast of the islands, with portions of the northern coastal waters included in the threat.

Overlapping long-period swells from the north, and then the north- northeast, will result in large surf for north and east facing shores of most islands. The north swell has been building and will reach the 8-foot High Surf Advisory (HSA) level for east facing shores today, but should remain below the north shore advisory level until later this evening. As the swell shifts around to the north-northeast this weekend, swell and surf heights will increase further and peak tonight through Saturday night, with advisory level surf along north facing shores, and possibly warning levels for east facing shores. Headed into next week, advisory level surf is possible with a couple of northwest swells beginning Sunday night into Monday.

HFO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. High Surf Advisory until 6 PM HST Sunday for Kauai Windward-Oahu Koolau-Olomana-Molokai Windward-Maui Windward West-Windward Haleakala-Big Island North and East.

Wind Advisory until 6 PM HST this evening for Big Island Summits.

Winter Storm Warning until 6 PM HST this evening for Big Island Summits.
