Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Miami FL 122 AM EST Sun Jan 17 2021

SHORT TERM.

Today and Monday .

An upper level trough will move through the Eastern States on Sunday before reaching the Atlantic waters on Monday with largely zonal flow in its wake. A weak low-level trough associated with the upper feature should cross through our area with little fanfare on Sunday night into Monday morning. A few sprinkles or light showers may accompany the trough as it passes through, but measurable precipitation should be the exception rather than the rule. Otherwise look for considerable cloud cover today as high level moisture streams across the area ahead of the upper trough. Given a cool start this morning temperatures will struggle to climb into the mid to upper 60s today given the persistent cloud cover. Lows tonight should be a touch warmer however, ranging from around 50 west of Lake Okeechobee to the mid-upper 50s elsewhere. Clearing skies are anticipated on Monday as high pressure regains control. Temperatures should begin to slowly moderate, but given the cooler continental flow readings should only top out in the lower 70s.

LONG TERM.

Tuesday Through Thursday .

High pressure will adequately anchor itself across the FL peninsula for a good portion of the extended period, while aloft, zonal flow gradually gives way to mid-level ridging as it nudges northward from the Caribbean by mid week. This quasi-stacked ridging will help reinforce dry and quiescent conditions across South Florida.

Temperatures will be cool to start on Tuesday morning, but gradual warming as both the lower and mid level ridges become better aligned and the northerly flow gains an easterly component. Thus, daytime highs will be in the lower to mid 70s across South Florida for the start of the period and warm to the lower 80s by late week. Overnight lows should follow the same warming trend.

Friday and Saturday .

By late week, a shortwave traversing the central CONUS will whip up our next frontal system. Ahead of the approaching front, the surface ridge will be shunted into the western Atlantic, albeit it's mid-level counterpart will remain in place. This should help to keep any favorable dynamics for a strong frontal passage to our north. While current model iterations depict another rather benign FROPA, there still remains plenty of uncertainty for this portion of the period regarding the usual timing/magnitude/impacts of these features. These details will come into better focus once we get closer in time. Stay tuned.

AVIATION(06Z TAFS).

VFR with a high level cloud deck most of the period. Light winds early this morning become N-NW at 5-10 kt this afternoon. Mainly dry, although very small chance for a shower or sprinkles late tonight into Monday morning as a weak front passes through the region.

MARINE.

A weak front should pass through the local waters tonight into Monday morning. This will result in moderate breezes from the N-NW on Monday. Thereafter high pressure should dominate the weather for the remainder of the week with relatively benign conditions and gentle to at times moderate breezes and dry weather.

BEACHES.

A high rip current risk will continue for the Gulf beaches today before decreasing on Monday.

Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
