Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Tucson AZ 326 PM MST Fri Jan 22 2021

SYNOPSIS. A pair of winter storm systems will impact the area Sunday and Monday afternoon into Tuesday with a good chance of valley rain and mountain snow. The strongest and coldest storm is expected to start Monday afternoon with lower snow levels possible and more significant accumulations in the mountains. Gusty winds at times along with temperatures well below average.

DISCUSSION. The first of 2 winter storms that will move across the state is currently near northern California and will dig into Arizona Sunday. There is already some residual moisture for it to work with along with whatever it manages to bring along. A cooler airmass will see snow levels falling to 5000 feet with several inches possible above 6000 feet. Some higher mountain locations may exceed 6 inches so a Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for Sunday. Valley rainfall amounts in the .1 to .3 inch range for most locations.

A potentially colder and stronger system is expected to drop into Arizona Monday and Tuesday. We will probably not see a whole lot until Monday afternoon, but an even colder airmass may drop snow levels to 4500 feet Monday, and below 4000 feet Tuesday morning. Snow showers are not out of the question in some valley locations Tuesday. Significant accumulations are possible in the mountains, potentially well in excess of the Sunday system.

Depending on clearing, a widespread hard freeze is possible Wednesday morning, and may include the Tucson metro area. Lots of timing issues before that is nailed down.

AVIATION. Valid through 24/00Z. Generally FEW to at times SCT clouds at 5k-9k ft AGL through the next 24 hours. Some increasing mid-high levels cloudiness is likely between 15k-20k ft AGL Saturday afternoon. Clouds may thicken and lower by later Saturday evening into Sunday morning as another storm system begins to impact the region. VCSH or -SHRA is possible at TAF locales by 06Z Sunday. SFC winds from the SW around 12-18 kts with gusts up to 28 kts are likely Saturday afternoon. Aviation discussion not updated for TAF amendments.

FIRE WEATHER. A series of colder storm systems will move across the region this weekend into next week, for a continued chance of valley rain and much lower snow levels late Saturday into Sunday and then again Monday through Tuesday. Some breezy winds are expected during this unsettled weather period, however RH levels will remain high with plenty of moisture. A drier pattern is expected Wednesday and Thursday of next week.

TWC WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. Winter Weather Advisory from 1 AM to 8 PM MST Sunday for AZZ510>512-514.

NOTE: East coast views moved to GEOS-16. They are experimental and not well supported by NOAA so they may not be correct so be warned. This change required redoing a large amount of the GOES code. If the image you are expecting is not showing, please let me know. You may need to use the EDIT function to update your location.

There are five sources. 1) Documents and manuals from a variety of sources. These have not been checked for accuracy and in many cases have not even been read by anyone associated with L-36.com. I have no idea of they are useful or accurate, I leave that to the reader. 2) Articles others have written and submitted. If you have questions on these, please contact the author. 3) Articles that represent my personal opinions. These are intended to promote thought and for entertainment. These are not intended to be fact, they are my opinions. 4) Small programs that generate result presented on a web page. Like any computer program, these may and in some cases do have errors. Almost all of these also make simplifying assumptions so they are not totally accurate even if there are no errors. Please verify all results. 5) Weather information is from numerous of sources and is presented automatically. It is not checked for accuracy either by anyone at L-36.com or by the source which is typically the US Government. See the NOAA web site for their disclaimer. Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
