Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Tampa Bay Ruskin FL 331 AM EDT Wed Jul 8 2020

DISCUSSION. An area of surface low pressure over Georgia today will continue to slowly shift east into the Atlantic as surface ridging extends across southern Florida and into the Gulf of Mexico. This will support continued generally westerly flow, with deep moisture being pulled into the Florida Peninsula behind the low. This pattern will favor a few showers and thunderstorms developing over the Gulf of Mexico overnight and shifting onshore through the morning hours each day through the rest of the week, with scattered to numerous thunderstorms developing over the interior through the afternoon hours. The partial exception will be slightly drier air pushing into the area on Thursday, keeping storm coverage fairly limited compared to today and Friday.

With ridging at the surface and aloft of Florida producing moderate subsidence, temperatures will run a bit higher than normal. With the ample surface moisture keeping dew points high, heat indexes will approach advisory levels each afternoon beginning Thursday.

During the weekend, a mid level trough will sweep west to east across the southeastern US, giving a push of moisture into the Florida Peninsula. This will allow for more numerous to widespread storm coverage Saturday through Monday, with the highest chances over the interior. Conditions will moderate slightly for Monday and Tuesday as the trough shifts east and weakens, although continued westerly flow will still allow for scattered to numerous thunderstorms each day, mainly in the afternoon and evening.

AVIATION. Mostly VFR conditions should hold through mid morning, when scattered thunderstorms are expected to begin to develop again and continue increasing in coverage and shifting inland through the afternoon. Periods of reduced flight categories will be possible as storms move overhead. Thunderstorms are expected to clear out during the late afternoon and early evening as storms dissipate and shift inland.

MARINE. High pressure over the central Gulf of Mexico today will shift back east across southern Florida late in the week and through the weekend, with mostly westerly winds, generally staying less than 15 knots. Showers and thunderstorms will develop over the waters each day, producing locally hazardous boating conditions.

FIRE WEATHER. No relative humidity concerns. High dispersion indices are expected again this afternoon.
