Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Tampa Bay Ruskin FL 258 AM EDT Fri Apr 10 2020

DISCUSSION. A predominant zonal flow sets up over Florida as a closed upper low sits over Maine with upper trouging extending through the New England states southwest to Tennessee. Weak upper ridging extends northward through the central U.S. and will flatten out as it slowly progresses eastward over the next couple of days. Another upper low spinning over southwest California will eject eastward by late Saturday as an open trough progressing farther to the east by the end of the weekend. This trough will lend support to the next significant weather system expected to influence the eastern half of the U.S. at the start of next week and continuing through the middle of next week.

On the surface, high pressure has shifted south over Cuba. A surface low currently located near Maine extends a cold front southward through the western Atlantic, then turning westward near the Bahamas and extending over northern Florida. This will bring increasing cloudiness and a chance of showers and storms for west central and southwest Florida today. The front will wash out by Saturday with partly cloudy skies expected through the weekend. Temperatures will be slightly cooler the next couple of days with increasing cloudiness, before heating up on Sunday ahead of the next weather system. Gusty southerly winds will advect a warm and humid air mass over Florida on Sunday as an area of low pressure develops near LA/AR/MS. This system will move northeast through the Mississippi River Valley late Sunday into Monday and will be located over the Great Lakes by Monday afternoon. The trailing edge of the cold front will move across Florida producing the highest chances of showers and storms (30-70% POPs) through the period. Although widespread severe storms are not expected at this time, some storms could produce gusty winds and heavy downpours on Monday. The front will stall out over central Florida producing continued bouts of showers through the middle of next week. Temperatures next week will run a few degrees above average.

AVIATION. A cold front over northern Florida will shift south through the day producing some MVFR CIGs and SHRA later this morning and afternoon. Will hold VCSH at the northern most terminals from PGD northward after 15Z and FMY/RSW after 18Z. Winds will remain out of the WNW less than 10 knots overnight, then increasing 10-15 knots with higher gusts after 15Z.

MARINE. High pressure shifts south as a frontal boundary drifts over northern Florida. This will produce a chance of showers and storms today. Winds start out W-NW around 10-15 knots, veering N and increasing to around 15 knots by the afternoon, then further veering E by Saturday. On Sunday, the interaction between high pressure ridging southwest across Florida and a developing area of low pressure near LA/AR/MS will produce a tight pressure gradient with winds approaching SCEC or possibly SCA level on Sunday and Monday. The front moves over Florida on Monday producing a good chance of showers and storms. This front stalls out over central Florida with continued wet weather over the coastal waters into the middle of next week.

FIRE WEATHER. Abundant moisture and rain chances associated with a frontal boundary on Friday and another on Monday will preclude any red flag conditions through the period. Gusty 20 foot and transport winds associated with the front expected to move through Florida on Monday will produce high dispersions ahead of the front on Sunday and in the vicinity of the front on Monday. No other fire weather impacts are expected.

Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases.
