Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Tampa Bay Ruskin FL 934 AM EDT Sat Jun 12 2021

UPDATE. 12Z TBW sounding showing solid westerly flow thru the entire column as surface ridge continues to sink thru the FL Straits today. Weak upper troughing from the Southern Appalachians into the C Gulf with narrow dry slot over N FL Peninsula as seen in water vapor imagery. E Gulf showers have been developing this morning moving ashore and weakening. Have updated grids to reflect latest radar trends then hybrid blend of regime 4-5 used as convection to become enhanced over interior areas this afternoon. Warm and humid high dewpoint airmass to remain in place to produce heat indices around 100 degrees today in the shade, also remember full sun will make it feel much hotter as well. So people doing outdoor activities should hydrate properly as extended exposure could cause heat related impacts.

AVIATION. Isolated showers in E Gulf this morning moving ashore for some brief MVFR ceilings at coastal TAF sites. Into the afternoon SHRa/TSRA coverage to increase as convection moves inland.

Prev Discussion. /issued 329 AM EDT Sat Jun 12 2021/

DISCUSSION . The surface ridge axis has moved into south Florida and will continue to move slowly south today and tonight as a trough of low pressure settles into the southeastern U.S. This sets up westerly flow across our region which typically favors late night and early morning showers near the coast transitioning to afternoon showers and storms over the interior. Some showers are already moving across Charlotte and Lee counties this morning. Convective allowing models aren't very bullish on shower coverage today despite precipitable waters in the 1.7 to 1.9 range. May need to raise pops over the interior later today but will just show scattered storms for now. With troughing surface and aloft moving into the deep south tonight, expect to see increasing showers and thunderstorms near and south of the convergence zone ahead of the boundary. Best rain chances will be over the Nature Coast, but westerly flow to the south could bring a few showers or storms into coastal areas to the south. Sunday through Tuesday will feature deep westerly flow with plenty of moisture to work with. Showers and storms could happen at any time, but the late night through morning hours will favor coastal locations while the afternoon will favor the interior. Wednesday will be a transition day as the trough begins to weaken. We'll still have enough moisture around for scattered showers and storms, and westerly flow will continue the late night and early morning showers and storms near the coast transitioning inland during the afternoon. The forecast for the end of the week will be influenced by deep- layered high pressure moving back over the state and a potential tropical system in the Gulf. It goes without saying that this part of the forecast is of very low confidence with so much going on between the western Gulf and the Florida peninsula. For now will favor a drying trend with the building ridge overhead and deeper moisture remaining over the western and central Gulf.

MARINE . Winds will begin to increase out of the west and southwest today as high pressure slips south and a trough of low pressure moves into the deep south. The enhanced westerly flow will continue through at least Tuesday, then begin to weaken on Wednesday. Deep moisture will result in scattered showers and thunderstorms right through mid week.

FIRE WEATHER . No fire weather concerns as increasing moisture brings better rain chances and coverage through at least the middle of next week.
