Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Tampa Bay Ruskin FL 811 AM EDT Sat Aug 8 2020

UPDATE. A few morning coastal showers and thunderstorms are underway along the nature coast. These storms initially developed along a residual boundary and have remained around thanks to a relatively favorable environment. Motion has been quite slow given the light steering flow. This will be the theme with convection throughout the day. With high pressure situated directly overhead, there isn't much wind to drive the storms.

This sort of setup is highly favorable for convection to initiate along sea breeze boundaries. With light flow, storm motion will be fairly slow. As storms begin to collapse, light winds will allow outflow boundaries to propagate in erratic fashions away from storms and potentially collide with one another. After initial storms begin firing, these boundaries will have to be monitored for additional convective initiation.

The good news is that the overall environment does not favor severe weather. Data coming in from the 12Z balloon launch suggests a moist column with warm temperatures. Additionally, the CAPE profile suggests that, while favorable for heavy downpours, the threat for hail and damaging winds remains low. This doesn't mean we couldn't see a strong storm, but widespread strong storms are unlikely.

Overall, today's expectations are in line with the current forecast. Some adjustments have been made for the first few hours to better reflect ongoing convection, but otherwise the forecast remains on track. No additional significant changes are anticipated before the afternoon.

AVIATION. VFR conditions prevail today with a light sea breeze developing later this afternoon near coastal terminals. Thunderstorms are favored this afternoon and will remain of concern through the evening hours, with light flow leading to storms that may be almost stationary in the vicinity most airports. This could lead to temporary MVFR/IFR conditions, but timing and location is too uncertain for TAFs at this time.

MARINE. A few showers and thunderstorms are ongoing along the Nature Coast, but otherwise conditions remain fairly quiet today. Most of the convection is expected to remain inland this afternoon, but a few storms could develop near shore later on today. Otherwise benign marine conditions could become locally hazardous in passing storms.

Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
