Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Tampa Bay Ruskin FL 213 PM EDT Mon May 10 2021

DISCUSSION. Nearly zonal flow continues aloft much of the Gulf of Mexico region through Tue night. Atlantic high pressure ridges across FL and out over the Gulf with a broad axis meandering through the south half of the state. A stalled front is strung out along the northern Gulf coast.

The 1000-700MB flow will be southerly to southwesterly for the next 24 to 36 hours or so. Light southerly surface flow shifts to south- west to west in the afternoon hours . and will be enhanced by sea breezes. Model PWAT values run 1.2 to 1.5 inches but with swaths of 1.6 to 1.8 inches. This moisture along with daytime heating and sea breeze circulations . will support some showers and a few thunder- storms. Coverage will favor inland locations in the southern and central counties this afternoon and Tue afternoon. Temperatures run above normal with highs inland in the mid 90s and heat indices around 100.

From Wed through Fri: The zonal flow aloft the region gives way to troughing as an upper low drops out of south-central Canada and slides across the Great Lakes to near New England by the end of the week. In response the stalled front moves southward as high pressure across FL retreats east. The front is expected to cross central FL Thu then slip into south FL Fri. Moisture increases as the front approaches and moves through with enhanced shower/storm coverage . favoring Thu then slowly clearing by Fri. Temperatures start off above normal then dip closer to normal.

For Sat-Mon: The upper low and trough eject out over the Atlantic Sat as ridging builds over the plains states then tracks to the eastern US by Mon. The cold front settles down across Cuba and the Bahamas then stalls. Mean while high pressure builds into the northeastern states then exits to the Atlantic . ridging down into the Gulf of Mexico. The high pressure will help keep temperatures near seasonal and bring drier air for most locations. However the stalled front will be close enough to provide afternoon showers and a few storms to the southern counties.

AVIATION. 10/18Z TAFs. Prevailing VFR with FEW to SCT clouds. However interior and SW FL aerodromes will see ISOLD TSRA/FEW CB and BKN AC/CI TIL 00Z. S winds shift to the SW-W during rest of the afternoon AOB 13KT. Winds diminish to light and VRBL overnight then become S and increase some Tue morning.

MARINE. Atlantic high pressure across the waters continues into midweek with southerly winds and afternoon sea breezes. A cold front with showers and thunderstorms treks through late in the week with winds shifting to north and northeast. High pressure builds in during the weekend and may result in increased winds and seas.

FIRE WEATHER. High pressure across the state will keep winds light with afternoon sea breezes along with adequate moisture for showers and thunderstorms and to preclude any low RH concerns. The high pressure slides away during the end of the week as a cold front traverses FL with increased shower/storm coverage. High pressure builds in for the weekend with some drier air.
