Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Diego CA 120 PM PDT Mon May 10 2021

SYNOPSIS. Cooler weather will prevail today with temperatures near to slightly below normal. A warming trend is in store Tuesday through Thursday, with temperatures warming to 5 to 10 degrees above normal for inland areas. The marine layer will continue each night and morning, but will be shallower and less extensive Tuesday through Thursday night. A low pressure system will move into California this weekend, bringing cooler temperatures, increased onshore flow, and more extensive marine layer cloud cover.

DISCUSSION. FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE . SAN DIEGO . WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES .

At 1 PM, satellite imagery showed low clouds hanging tough over the northern Inland Empire and inland Orange County. The San Diego County valleys have cleared out nicely, with some patchy low clouds sticking around the coast. Low clouds should continue clearing out of inland areas this afternoon, with coastal Orange County likely remaining overcast through the afternoon. Clouds will spread back inland this evening, covering much of the coastal basin by daybreak.

High pressure will build into the region beginning Tuesday, resulting in a warming trend. The valleys and deserts will see the greatest warming. Meanwhile, coastal areas will remain mild due to continued onshore flow. Temperatures look to peak on Wednesday and Thursday for the inland valleys, with highs in the upper 80s to low 90s in the Inland Empire, and highs near 80 degrees for the San Diego valleys. For the lower deserts, temperatures will be similar Wednesday through Friday, with highs around 100 degrees. The marine layer will become shallower Tuesday through Friday morning, with low clouds only reaching into portions of the western valleys.

This weekend, a low pressure system from the northwest will move into California. This will bring cooler temperatures, increased onshore flow, and more extensive marine layer cloud cover. Models remain divided on if this trough will bring light precipitation to the region this weekend. The operational EC is showing some marine layer drizzle possible Saturday night and Sunday, but the GFS keeps precipitation offshore. Ensembles are showing little to no accumulation, so for now, the forecast remains dry for the next week.

AVIATION. 102020Z . Coast/Valleys . Low clouds are persisting across far southern San Bernardino and Orange counties, with bases 2500-3000 FT MSL. Low clouds will scatter out by 22Z.
