SYNOPSIS. Periods of gusty easterly Santa Ana winds will continue into Tuesday through the mountain passes. Dry weather and warming will occur through Tuesday. Gusty south winds will develop on Wednesday in advance of a low pressure system that will deliver a round of showers Wednesday afternoon and night. There is even a slight chance of thunderstorms near the coast Wednesday afternoon and evening. Dry and warmer conditions will return Thursday through Friday. Another storm will pass to the north this weekend. This will lead to increasing west winds in the mountains and deserts, but dry weather will most likely prevail.
DISCUSSION. FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE . SAN DIEGO . WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES .
-Forecast Highlights-
* Round of showers will impact SoCal Wednesday afternoon-evening * Slight chance of thunderstorms near the coast * Localized, minor urban flooding is possible * Gusty south winds develop and strengthen Wednesday
An upper level ridge lies over SoCal and this is bringing clear and warm weather conditions to the area with the warmest readings west of the mountains. Temps have soared well into the 70s with even a few 80-degree readings over the inland valleys.
Gusty east Santa Ana winds will pick back up again tonight-Tue morning with peak gusts to about 40 mph in the wind-prone locales through the San Gorgonio Pass and along and south of I-8 through the San Diego County mountains.
Dry and warm weather will continue through Tuesday under a ridge of high pressure.
The weather will take an abrupt change on Wednesday with a round of showers expected Wednesday afternoon and evening as a Pacific storm moves from west to east across SoCal. There is even just enough instability to support a slight chance of thunderstorms near the coast Wednesday afternoon with MUCAPE up to 300 J/KG. GFS and EC ensembles have converged on most likely rainfall amounts, ranging from 0.20-0.35 for Orange County to the Inland Empire, around 0.50 inches for the San Diego coast and valleys, mountains 0.40-0.80 inches, and deserts 0-0.10 inches.
Rainfall rates are forecast to remain below thresholds for debris flow near recent burn scars, but heavier cells could pose an issue for minor urban flooding, mainly near the coast, closest to the axis of instability. Rogue isolated heavier cells will need to be watched.
Snow levels will be 5000-5500 feet. 1-3 inches of snow is possible in the mountain communities of San Bernardino County and the higher peaks of the San Jacinto Mountains.
Gusty south winds will develop ahead of the low on Wednesday. South to southwest wind gusts of 30-40 mph appear possible along the coast. EC ensemble mean has wind gusts near 35 mph at San Diego Wednesday afternoon. A Wind Advisory may be needed for parts of the area on Wednesday.
The storm will exit the region quickly Wednesday night with precipitation coming to an end. So after a few early morning showers on Thursday, a return to sunshine is expected.
A longwave trough will be establishing itself over the U.S. west coast beginning this weekend and amplifying further south mid-late next week. One shortwave will pass to the north this weekend. GFS has this feature too far north to deliver any precipitation to SoCal. EC ensembles though do show some light showers this weekend with a tenth of an inch or less. NBM keeps it dry here this weekend. Will be watching trends with this. West winds will pick up with strong gusts possible over the mountains and parts of the deserts especially by Monday.
Dry weather will likely continue early next week before precipitation chances return during the middle and latter part of next week as the trough digs further south. GFS and EC ensembles show mainly light precipitation possible during the second half of next week, but they offer no timing definition. The pattern does look to become favorable for additional precipitation to occur.
AVIATION. 012050Z . Mostly clear with VFR conditions through Tue.
Starting around 05Z Tue until around 18Z Tue, areas of east to northeast sfc winds with gusts 25-35 kt expected in foothills and portions of adjacent valleys. Strongest winds will be through and below mountain passes. Areas of locally moderate up/downdrafts and LLWS possible over and west of the mountains.
MARINE. Gusty south winds expected ahead of an approaching storm system on Wednesday. Wind gusts will be 20-25 kt. Isolated thunderstorms are also possible over the coastal waters on Wednesday.
BEACHES. An incoming storm system could generate isolated thunderstorms, resulting in lightning at the beaches on Wednesday. Best chance of lightning is between 10 AM and 5 PM Wednesday.
FIRE WEATHER. Gusty easterly Santa Ana winds will impact the mountain passes again tonight into Tuesday morning with peak gusts to about 40 mph through the San Gorgonio Pass and along/south of I-8 over the San Diego County mountains/foothills. The lowest inland humidity will fall to around 10 to 15 percent on Tuesday. This will maintain elevated fire weather conditions into Tuesday.
An approaching low pressure system is expected to bring stronger and gusty south winds and a greater recovery in humidity on Wednesday with a good chance for wetting rainfall Wednesday afternoon and night.
