Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City NC 646 AM EDT Sun Jun 13 2021

SYNOPSIS. A cold front will linger south of the area into early next week as several weak areas of low pressure move east along it. A cold front will move across the area Tuesday into Wednesday.

NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/. As of 645 AM Sunday . No changes to previous thinking. There is still plenty of low level moisture evident across eastern NC early this morning as evidenced by widespread low clouds observed in the wake of the cold frontal passage. The aforementioned front is forecast to remain stalled south of the area while several weak areas of low pressure move east along it. This will help to keep moisture along the central and southern coastal areas while drier air begins to filter into northern locations today and tonight and helps to slowly erode the cloud cover there. While the bulk of any additional rainfall will remain offshore with the front, a few light showers will be possible this morning until the low level moisture begins to get scoured out by convective heating late this morning. The sea breeze will attempt to move inland this afternoon/early evening across the south coast and could help to trigger an isolated shower or thunderstorm, but most locations should remain dry with PoPs today only in the slight chance range and confined to the south coast. High temps will be slightly warmer than Saturday with readings in the mid 80s inland, and upper 70s to low 80s along the OBX.

SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 AM MONDAY/. As of 645 AM Sunday . A stray shower could occur along the south coast tonight due to proximity to the stalled front and associated shower activity to the south, but again expecting dry conditions to prevail overnight. Radiational cooling should be good tonight as skies slowly clear from north to south and winds become light as high pressure to the north builds in. This will result in areas of fog developing along with low clouds. Lows will range from the mid to upper 60s inland and the upper 60s to lower 70s coast.

LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/. As of 330 AM Sunday . A cold front will approach from the northwest Monday and push through the area Tuesday into Tuesday night. High pressure will build into the area Wednesday and Thursday, then will slide offshore Friday. Another cold front approaches from the north next weekend.

Monday through Wednesday . An upper trough digs across the East Coast with several embedded shortwaves moving across the area through this period. An area of low pressure progged to be off the NC coast Monday morning will quickly move away from the area through the day as a northern stream shortwave digs into the Great Lakes. Isolated to widely scattered showers are possible Monday afternoon into Monday night as upper level diffluence improves with a moist and unstable airmass in place. The shortwave and attendant cold front will then approach the FA Tuesday and push across the area late in the day. Strong to severe storms possible Tuesday afternoon and evening with descent upper level forcing, shear increasing to around 30-40 kt, and LI's greater than -6C. The front will be offshore Wednesday but another shortwave moves across the area with descent shear and instability in place in the afternoon for additional storms to develop, mainly along the sea breeze. Temps will be quite warm with highs around 90 inland and mid to upper 80s along the coast Monday and Tuesday. Temps cool some Wednesday behind the front with high expected in the low to mid 80s.

Thursday through Saturday . The main upper level trough axis moves offshore early Thursday with high pressure building in from the northwest. One last weak embedded shortwave will move across the area in the afternoon which aid in triggering isolated storms along the sea breeze in the afternoon. Ridging builds aloft Thursday night and Friday with sfc high pressure sliding offshore bringing dry conditions and a warming trend as southernly flow increases as gradients tighten ahead of an approaching cold front, which is expected to bring a return of unsettled for the latter half of the weekend. Highs Thursday expected in the low to mid 80s warming to around 90 Saturday.

AVIATION /12Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/. SHORT TERM /Through Tonight/ . As of 645 AM Sunday . Widespread MVFR ceilings early this morning may briefly become IFR. The low clouds should be slow to erode and could persist until early afternoon before VFR conditions return. Strong radiational cooling overnight should result in areas of fog and low stratus clouds developing well after midnight with MVFR to occasional IFR conditions again possible.

LONG TERM /Monday through Thursday/ . As of 430 AM Sunday . Pred VFR conditions expected Mon with brief sub-VFR conditions possible in isolated to widely scattered showers and storms in the afternoon into Monday night. Scattered strong to severe storms expected Tuesday afternoon and evening ahead of a cold front with periods of sub-VFR likely. The cold front pushes south of the area Tuesday night with only isolated to widely scattered showers possible during the afternoon hours Wednesday and Thursday. Patchy fog will also be possible during the late night/early morning hours most days.

MARINE. SHORT TERM /Today and Tonight/ . As of 645 AM Sunday . Continue the SCAs for the coastal waters north of Ocracoke Inlet. The moderate NE post frontal surge 15-20 kt will persist through this afternoon as high pressure builds in from the north. This will result in 4-6 ft seas continuing across the northern waters into early afternoon and over the central waters through this evening. Tonight winds will become E and diminish to 10 kt or less late with seas subsiding to 2-4 ft near shore and 3-5 ft over the outer waters.

LONG TERM /Monday through Thursday/ . As of 445 AM Sunday . Low pressure offshore Monday will pull away from the area with light N/NE winds shifting to S to SW late in the day with seas around 2-4 ft and up to 5 ft across the central waters. A cold front approaches Monday night and Tuesday with SW winds increasing to around 10-20 kt and seas around 3-4 ft. The front pushes offshore Tuesday night with winds becoming N to NE around 5-15 kt and seas around 2-4 ft Wednesday through Thursday.
