Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City NC 309 AM EST Thu Nov 21 2019

SYNOPSIS. High pressure will move overhead today, before sliding off the coast tomorrow. A cold front will move close to the area Friday, and then push through late Saturday night. High pressure will build over the area late this weekend into early next week, with another front approaching the area mid week.

NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/. As of 245 AM Thurs . Aside from some high cirrus clouds streaming in from the west, it is clear and calm across Eastern NC early this morning, as high pressure continues to move in from the west. Temperatures have cooled into the low to mid 30s across much of the area, but remain in the 40s along the coast. Expect low temps drop a few more degrees to reach around 30 over the interior coastal plain, low to mid 30s further east, and low 40s along the coast.

High pressure will shift overhead today leading to sunny skies again with light winds. High temps should reach a few degrees warmer than yesterday, given slightly higher low level thicknesses (guidance again is too cool), so expect readings to range from the mid to upper 50s across NE NC, to the low 60s south and west . highest over Onlsow and Duplin counties where mid 60s are possible.

SHORT TERM /TONIGHT/. As of 300 AM Thurs . High pressure will slide off the southern NC coast tonight, but should still be close enough to allow winds to decouple inland. This combined with mostly clear skies will allow temps to fall quickly this evening, and reach the upper 30s to low 40s for much of the area, with the beaches and Outer Banks remaining in the upper 40s to low 50s.

LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/. As of 245 AM Thu . Above normal temps expected Friday, with unsettled weather for Saturday and Saturday night. High pressure will build back over the area late this weekend into early next week. Another cold front will approach the area mid next week with the next chance for rain.

Friday through Saturday . High pressure will continue to move off the SE coast Fri, as frontal system approaches from the west. Backdoor front will likely push south into the area Fri night and early Sat, stalling as associated low pressure lifts into the KY/TN region. Portions of ENC will likely be in the warm sector by late Sat, as front lifts back north as the low lifts up through the Appalachians then pushes the cold front through ENC early Sun morning as the low tracks across the lower Great Lakes region. Think most of Friday and Fri night will remain dry, with just sc pops across the northern forecast area. Will continue chance pops Sat, increasing to likely late Sat and Sat night. Best rain chances still look like Sat night into early Sun morning. Fri looks like the warmest day with WSW winds, could see highs 65-70 deg for much of the area. Temps Sat will be trickier with cloud cover and placement of frontal boundary. Temps across the southern areas will likely be able to climb in the mid to upper 60s, while temps across the northern forecast area may struggle to see 60 deg.

Sunday through Thursday . Dry weather looks to return late weekend into early next week as the cold front pushes offshore early Sun followed by high pres building in from the west Sunday into Tue. Slightly below normal temps expected behind the front with highs 55-60 deg through Mon and lows in the upper 30s to mid 40s. Highs should warm into the low to mid 60s on Tue and mid to upper 60s on Wed. A cold front will approach from the west mid week, with increasing rain chances Wednesday . though models are trending a bit drier than previous runs showing moisture having a tough time making it east of the mountains.

AVIATION /08Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/. Short Term /Through Friday Morning/ . As of 300 AM Thurs . VFR conditions are expected for the most part through the TAF period. Some steam fog is likely at terminals KPGV and KEWN through mid morning, which at times could reduce visibilities to 3 miles or so. Then, mostly sunny skies expected today, with light winds.

Long Term /Friday through Monday/ . As of 245 AM Thu . Expect pred VFR into Fri with high pressure in control. Periods of sub-VFR possible Friday night into early Sat, with better chances late Sat and Sat night as a frontal system and associated precipitation moves into the area. Pred VFR is expected to return Sun and continue Mon as high pressure builds back over the area.

MARINE. Short Term /through Tonight/ . As of 300 AM Thurs . SCAs continue for the central and northern waters where seas remain 5-7 ft and winds are gusting to 25 kts. Winds are currently NW 15-20 kts, and will continue through about mid morning before weakening to 10-15 kts this afternoon. Winds tonight will briefly become even weaker before turning to the W and strengthening to 15-20 kts. Seas will also hold steady through the rest of the morning, and subside to 3-5 ft through tonight.

Long Term /Friday through Monday/ . As of 245 AM Thu . Fri SW winds increase to 15-25 kt in the late morning and afternoon ahead of an approaching front with seas building to 4-7 ft in the afternoon into Fri evening. Will hold off on SCA headlines for now, but all coastal waters and Pamlico Sound could see a period of SCA conditions. The front is expected to push south into the waters late Fri night and Sat morning with N/NE winds 10-15 kt, then becoming S/SW 10-15 kt in the afternoon as the front lifts back to the north. Conditions will deteriorate quickly Sat night, as a period of strong SW winds 20-30 kt develop ahead of the front . with the potential for a brief period of gale force gusts. Seas will be mainly 2 to 4 ft Sat, building very quickly to 6-10 ft Sat night into Sun. Winds will shift to NW 15-25 kt behind the front Sun, with large seas gradually subsiding during the afternoon and evening with offshore flow. Mon NW winds 10-15 kt will diminish to 5-10 kt as high pressure builds over the waters, with seas subsiding to 2-4 ft.

MHX WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. NC . None. MARINE . Small Craft Advisory until 5 PM EST this afternoon for AMZ152- 154. Small Craft Advisory until 1 PM EST this afternoon for AMZ150.
