Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City NC 400 AM EDT Tue May 11 2021

SYNOPSIS. Low pressure will move through mid week, with high pressure building in late in the week through next weekend.

NEAR TERM /Through Today/. As of 4 AM Tue . Sfc cold front has passed offshore of ENC early this morning. High 850 mb RHs trapped under the frontal inversion spell mainly overcast conditions will continue through today. A couple showers or sprinkles possible today, but most places remain dry, and not expecting anything more than a T of rain in the spotty showers. Temps seasonably mild with highs 65-70.

SHORT TERM /Tonight/. As of 4 AM Tue . Low pressure will develop in the Deep South along low level wavy front to our south overnight. Isentropic lift strengthens late tonight, with light rain possibly overspreading the swrn zones just prior to sunrise. Low temps seasonably cool with readings in the low/mid 50s.

LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/. As of 315 AM Tuesday . Strong signal continues in the model guidance of a late-season cold air damming event Wednesday as parent high pressure builds east and south from the Ohio Valley and wedges down the East Coast. Continued trends of previous forecast adjustments with high temperatures below the lowest guidance for Wednesday, in the mid/upper 50s area-wide. Strong isentropic lift over the wedge will lead to steady stratiform precipitation, particular over the southern half of the CWA and have raised PoPs to high likely/categorical over the southern tier and high chance north for Wednesday.

Weak waves of low pressure moving south of the area will keep small rain chances in the forecast for Thursday into Friday, while temperatures remain below normal with chilly lows in the mid to upper 40s, and highs upper 60s to lower 70s Thursday and Friday.

High pressure building along the eastern seaboard will lead to a slow warming trend under generally clear skies. Temperatures will edge back toward 80 degrees for the weekend and into the lower 80s by early next week. An approaching cold front may bring in some scattered showers and thunderstorms by Tuesday.

AVIATION /07Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/. SHORT TERM /through late tonight/ . As of 2 AM Tue . MVFR cigs early this morning gradually lift to low end VFR through the morning. Mo cloudy to ovc skies expected much of the day but cigs expected to remain VFR. Winds will be light nerly through the fcst period.

LONG TERM /Wednesday through Saturday/ . As of 320 AM Tuesday . Widespread low ceilings are likely Wednesday in stratiform rain as a cold air damming scenario develops. MVFR and perhaps periods of IFR conditions are possible. Showers will be confined to areas closer to the coast Thursday and Friday, which should mean largely VFR conditions for the TAF sites. Sunny and drier conditions expected with VFR category ceilings/vsbys for Saturday.

MARINE. SHORT TERM /Today and Tonight/ . As of 4 AM Tue . Nerly flow has developed behind fropa, with winds generally 10-20 kt, though a few gusts to 25 kt through mid morning possible. SCA's have ended for ctrl waters. Winds will be generally 5-15 kt through today into this evening, but then a strong surge of nerly winds develop invof low pres strengthening to the south late tonight. Winds will inc drastically to 20-30 kt prior to sunrise Wed, and have issued SCA for all marine zones except for Pamlico River.

LONG TERM /Wednesday through Saturday/ . As of 315 AM Tuesday . Gradient between strong high pressure wedging down the East Coast on Wednesday and low pressure offshore will lead to continued SCA conditions over most waters Wednesday into Wednesday night. Winds will be NE at 15-25 knots with seas 4-6 feet Wednesday and Wednesday night. Conditions improve Thursday into the weekend with NE winds 10-15 knots and seas generally 3-5 feet.

MHX WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. NC . None. MARINE . Small Craft Advisory from 7 AM to 2 PM EDT Wednesday for AMZ137. Small Craft Advisory from 5 AM to 4 PM EDT Wednesday for AMZ135.
