Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area 1004 PM PST Thu Dec 12 2019

SYNOPSIS. Rain chances increase again Friday into Saturday as a trough with increased moisture move through Northern California. A cold front on Saturday will bring colder temperatures Saturday into Monday. An unsettled and wet pattern is likely to return by the middle of next week.

DISCUSSION. as of 09:42 PM PST Thursday . Well above normal temperatures were observed across the board today as a moist, subtropical airmass advected into California. Despite the moisture, the atmosphere lacked any significant source of lift and only widely scattered showers were observed. KMUX radar this evening shows precipitation has ended temporarily.

Lows tonight will be mild, ranging from the upper 40s to middle 50s under mostly cloudy skies. Areas south of the Golden Gate have seen high clouds clear, with areas of dense fog starting to develop along the coast and in the North Bay valleys. A Dense Fog Advisory has been issued for all coastal areas, the North Bay valleys, and the northern Salinas Valley through 8 AM Friday for dense fog with visibility one quarter mile or less.

A trough and increased moisture will move through the flow on Friday, bringing additional rain to the area. Rainfall will be focused over the North Bay with lesser amounts to the south. Rain will begin early Friday afternoon across the North Bay, spreading south to the Bay Area by late afternoon and the Monterey Bay region early in the evening. Rainfall will quickly taper off to showers and end Friday night. Precipitation amounts will be light, up to a half inch in the North Bay, a tenth to a quarter inch around the SF Bay Area, and a few hundredths around Monterey Bay.

A more pronounced trough will move across northern California late Saturday through early Sunday, but by then the best moisture will have shifted well to our south. Scattered showers will accompany the trough and frontal passage but precip amounts will be very light. The trough will usher in a colder and drier airmass from the northwest, and this will be felt at the surface Saturday through Monday. Highs will only be in the mid to upper 50s, but lows will be more significantly colder, dropping into the 30s to low 40s by Monday morning.

An upper ridge will amplify over the eastern Pacific on Sunday and move overhead on Monday. Models continue to show the potential for a trough to move through mid week, but the timing in the breakdown of the ridge is still not agreed upon. The GFS ensemble mean brings a trough through on Wednesday while the Euro ensemble is slower and less amplified. Either way, both models develop a longwave trough off the West Coast late next week, signaling the potential for an extended period of unsettled weather.

AVIATION. as of 10:03 PM PST Thursday . Dense fog has developed in the North Bay and the MRY Bay Area this evening. Weak upper level ridging is compressing the low-level moisture down to the surface which is the cause for the very low cigs and fog. Vsbys slowly improve after 18Z but remaining MVFR to IFR cigs through the day. By late in the period a shortwave will bring deeper moisture which should lift the cigs and bring light rain into the area.

Vicinity of KSFO . IFR cigs with bases around 500 ft. Vsbys may drop down to 3 miles after 12Z during the coolest part of the night. Isolated showers possible at any time but more likely by Friday evening. Winds variable through the period with speeds less than 10 kt.

SFO Bridge Approach . Similar to KSFO.

Monterey Bay Terminals . LIFR with vsbys as low as 1/4 to 1/2 mile through 17Z. Conditions improving to IFR to MVFR cigs after 17-18Z.

MARINE. as of 09:47 PM PST Thursday . Winds will switch to southerly later tonight as a weak frontla system approaches the area. Winds will switch to northwest Friday night and increase on Saturday as a cool upper trough passes to the north of the area. Large long-period northwest swell will impact the waters through Saturday.
