Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area 429 AM PDT Sat Aug 8 2020

SYNOPSIS. Warmer temperatures are expected over the weekend, especially inland. Slightly cooler weather returns early next week.

DISCUSSION. As of 3:00 AM PDT Saturday . There is a weak upper level low over central California with high pressure to the west and to the east over Texas. The upper low is forecast to drift off the coast today allowing the high over Texas to build westward. The 500 mb heights rise which will result in warmer temperatures today and Sunday. Temperatures will be warmest on Sunday ranging from the mid 60s to low 70s at the coast . to the 90s well inland, about 5 degrees above normal. The marine layer will become compressed while surface winds become light southerly near the coast. This will maintain the night and morning low clouds at the coast with less inland penetration.

Something to watch is the upper low drawing in some mid-level moisture from the Sierras into our district. Models indicate increased humidities at around 700 mb Saturday afternoon but believe there is not enough instability to cause any elevated convection within the CWA as the low will be drifting westward.

Still looking at cooling for early next week as an upper trough moves into British Columbia and deepens along the west coast. Temperatures should cool back to near normal values.

AVIATION. As of 04:29 AM PDT Saturday . for 12z TAFs. Mixed conditions this morning ranging from VFR to IFR. The marine layer is around 1500 to 1800 ft per profiler data while satellite imagery shows stratus along the coast through the Golden Gate gap and over the Monterey Bay region. Expecting VFR conditions to develop late this morning around 17z-18z then prevailing this afternoon. Expect low clouds to redevelop again overnight. Light winds this morning turning onshore this afternoon around 15 kt.

Vicinity of KSFO . Satellite shows patches of stratus developing around the south SF Bay. Intermittent IFR/VFR conditions this morning (until ~16z). Surrounding observations put cigs at about 600 to 700 ft. VFR conditions by late morning with increasing onshore winds to about 15 kt or so.

SFO Bridge Approach . Similar to KSFO.

Monterey Bay Terminals . IFR/LIFR conditions this morning. Satellite shows stratus over the Bay, Peninsula, and down the Salinas Valley. VFR conditions expected to develop by around 18z with another early return of stratus anticipated this evening. Onshore winds this afternoon around 10-15 kt.

MARINE. as of 01:56 AM PDT Saturday . Split flow today and tonight with north to northwest winds over the outer waters and southerly winds along the inner coastal waters. Expect locally breezy conditions to persist over the northern outer waters through much of the weekend. These winds will create locally hazardous conditions for smaller vessels. Winds will diminish into Sunday with southerly winds gradually expanding into much of the outer waters. Mixed seas will continue through the period with a short period northwest swell and a longer period southerly swell.

I do not sell or share any user data or anything else for that matter. The only personal information I save is in the site log which has a line for each page view which includes the IP address your browser sends in the header as well as which page you requested. I use this to block hackers and other bad actors. I do not use this raw data to create profiles on users. I periodically delete the log files. There are five sources. 1) Documents and manuals from a variety of sources. These have not been checked for accuracy and in many cases have not even been read by anyone associated with L-36.com. I have no idea of they are useful or accurate, I leave that to the reader. 2) Articles others have written and submitted. These are not intended to be fact, they are my opinions. 4) Small programs that generate result presented on a web page. Like any computer program, these may and in some cases do have errors. Almost all of these also make simplifying assumptions so they are not totally accurate even if there are no errors. Please verify all results. 5) Weather information is from numerous of sources and is presented automatically. It is not checked for accuracy either by anyone at L-36.com or by the source which is typically the US Government. See the NOAA web site for their disclaimer. Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
