Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area 400 PM PST Thu Mar 4 2021

SYNOPSIS. Seasonal temperatures and light southwest winds through Friday. Our next chance for rain moves over the area Friday night into early Saturday morning. Rain totals do not look impressive, as the system will move over the area too fast for much to accumulate. Temperatures will remain cool this weekend and onshore winds breezy Saturday, becoming light Sunday. More chances for rain remaining in the forecast for early to mid next week, keeping temperatures cooler than normal.

DISCUSSION. as of 2:00 PM PST Thursday . Satellite imagery shows clear skies aside from a few remnant stratus clouds along the coast of Point Reyes and Carmel early this afternoon. Fair weather conditions are occuring today with a marginally cooler and moister air mass in place versus 24 hours ago as a storm system descending from the Gulf of Alaska gradually approaches from the northwest. Tomorrow's weather is forecast to be similar to today's up through the early afternoon prior to the arrival of the next storm system. The main excitement in the office so far today has been coordination on the recent M8 earthquake in the Pacific Ocean-- at this time there are no active tsunami hazards in effect for our region, however, the NWS and state officials are watching this situation closely for any changes on this front and will notify if a coastal hazard becomes possible.

Models are in good agreement that the approaching system will bring bring a quick shot of precipitation to the region predominately by around sunset tomorrow (Friday) into early Saturday. Rain will taper off by around sunrise though some lingering light showers are possible through late Saturday morning. Precipitation totals will be predominately light with brief localized moderate rain rates (briefly up to 0.25/hr) possible with the frontal passage. The next storm system precipitation is expected to be beneficial with minimal impacts beyond slick roadways expected as amounts and rain rates are well below criteria for burn scar/slide/flash flooding concerns. Precipitation amounts will range from 0.25 to 0.50" for the immediate Bay Area and North Bay, up to 0.75" in the for the coastal ranges/hills, and less than 0.25" south of the Santa Cruz mountains. Southwest winds of 10-20mph with gusts to 25-30mph at the coast and higher terrain will accompany the arrival of this system weaker winds prevail elsewhere. Winds will become northwest in the wake of the front and become locally breezy along the coast by Saturday afternoon and relatively light elsewhere.

This weekend temperatures will have a hard time recovering as we see zonal flow aloft. Near the coast will see upper 50's and the inland areas lower 60's for high temperatures Saturday and Sunday. Northwest winds will remain breezy, with more gusty winds near the coast. Winds will look to calm down slightly Sunday.

By next week, ensemble members are in high agreement that wetter and cooler weather will impact the region from Monday through Wednesday as broad, slow moving 533dm 500mb low pressure system descends from the Gulf of Alaska then stalls in the vicinity. Latest data suggests this will bring an extended period of generally light to occasionally moderate precipitation throughout this timeframe, beginning roughly midday Monday and persist into Wednesday night, with the heaviest rain through the day on Tuesday for the majority in the urban areas of the Bay Area. Preliminary precipitation estimates of 2-3" in the coastal ranges and hills, 1.25" in the North Bay Valleys, 0.75-1.00" along the shorelines, and 0.50-.066" in the rain shadowed valleys. Breezy southerly winds will accompany this system. These precipitation amounts over the course of 2.5-3.0 days should not trigger any criteria for slides though localized ponding of water in poorly drained or low lying spots is definitely a possibility, especially later into the event. Cold air aloft will linger over the region by midweek and suppress daytime temperatures by 10-20 degrees into the upper mid to 50s for most areas, while pushing snow levels down as low as 2000-2500 feet and we could see some accumulations at the higher elevations given current data.

By late week next week in the wake of these wetter and cooler system, model uncertainty increases significantly, but there is some indication of a potential northerly/offshore wind event-- though given the anticipated rains, impacts will likely be low.

AVIATION. as of 03:59 PM PST Thursday . For the 00Z TAFs. Skies are currently mostly clear with a few clouds around 2000 to 3000 ft AGL. VFR continues until tonight. Models still insinuating the return of patchy low cigs around the region. Better chances in the North Bay and Monterey Bay than impacting the SF Bay. Currently expecting it to be MVFR cigs, though some are expected to hover right around that 1000 ft threshold. Clouds remain around the Bay Area on Friday with chances of rain expected closer to the end of the TAF period (05Z).

Winds are currently moderate with varying direction in large part due to the terminal location compared to the front moving in and the region's microclimates: more southerly in the North Bay, WNW along the Central Coast. Winds will be light but more out of the south-southwest. Winds will increase on Friday ahead of the boundary with select terminals seeing a few stronger gusts out of the south. Vicinity of KSFO . Conditions continue with VFR as winds switch over to the south-southwest around 10 knots. FEW to SCT expected overnight and into Friday morning with increasing mid to high level clouds Friday afternoon. Southwesterly winds increase late Friday afternoon as the front moves in bringing chances of rain to the terminal. SFO Bridge Approach . Similar to KSFO.

Monterey Bay Terminals . Onshore and breezy with VFR conditions. As winds subside, MVFR cigs expected late tonight and early Friday. Increasing high clouds Friday as the front moves toward the coastline, with low clouds expecting to lift by 18Z.

BEACHES. as of 1:57 PM PST Thursday . A long period northwest swell arrives today through Friday bringing an increased risk of sneaker waves, rip currents, long shore currents, and there could be hard breaking surf on steep beaches. There is the potential that these conditions will transition into high surf on Friday. The hazard is for west and northwest facing beaches where caution is advised. Never turn your back to the ocean.

MARINE. as of 02:28 PM PST Thursday . Southerly winds have developed ahead of a cold front and will increase overnight. Winds will be strongest north of Point Reyes. A long period northwest swell will impact the coastal waters through Friday. The passing cold front will bring rain later Friday into Saturday morning. Another low pressure system from the northwest will bring more rain early to mid next week.
