Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area 933 AM PST Thu Mar 4 2021
SYNOPSIS. Seasonal temperatures and light southwest winds through Friday. Our next chance for rain moves over the area Friday night into early Saturday morning. Rain totals do not look impressive, as the system will move over the area too fast for much to accumulate. Temperatures will remain cool this weekend and onshore winds breezy Saturday, becoming light Sunday. More chances for rain remaining in the forecast for early next week, keeping temperatures cooler than normal.
DISCUSSION. as of 8:30 AM PST Thursday . Visible imagery shows a fractured marine stratus deck extending from the Sonoma- Mendocino county line SSW along the Pacific coast through Cambria in coastal SLO county. As a result, sunrise skies range from completely clear for those inland, to partly cloudy along the bayshores and marine influenced valleys, to overcast conditions in portions of the North Bay. These low clouds will mix out by 10AM, but a band of higher level clouds is expected to arrive from the NW through the day ahead of an approaching storm system.
Models are in good agreement that the approaching system will bring bring a quick shot of precipitation to the region late day tomorrow (Friday) into early Saturday, with some weaker showers lingering as late as midday Saturday. Precipitation totals will be predominately light with brief localized moderate rain rates possible with the frontal passage. The next storm system precipitation is expected to be beneficial with minimal impacts beyond slick roadways expected as amounts and rain rates are well below criteria for burn scar/slide/flash flooding concerns. Precipitation amounts will range from 0.25 to 0.50" for the immediate Bay Area and North Bay, up to 0.75" in the for the coastal ranges/hills, and less than 0.25" south of the Santa Cruz mountains. Southwest winds of 10-20mph with gusts to 25-30mph at the coast and higher terrain will accompany the arrival of this system weaker winds prevail elsewhere. Winds will become northwest in the wake of the front and become locally breezy along the coast by Saturday afternoon and relatively light elsewhere.
By next week, ensemble members are in high agreement that wetter and cooler weather will impact the region from Monday through Wednesday. By late week next week in the wake of these wetter and cooler system, model uncertainty increases significantly, but there is some indication of a potential northerly/offshore wind event-- though given the anticipated rains, impacts will likely be low.
The primary forecast challenge of the day shift will initially be to tweak the parameters of tomorrow's quick moving system, but most focus will likely be on honing in some of the potentially lower temperatures, lower snow levels, precipitation amounts, and potential impacts of the colder, wetter systems expected early next week.
For more details on the current forecast, please refer to the previous discussion.
DISCUSSION. as of 3:42 AM PST Thursday . Satellite this morning shows patchy stratus moving inland. This will give most of the area a few low clouds as the sun begins to rise this morning. Thursday and Friday will be mostly mild, with temperatures a couple of degrees warmer than seasonal in higher terrain and the south eastern parts of the CWA. Southerly winds will be light to breezy as another upper level system approaches from the northwest, giving the area a chance for rain late Friday night.
An upper level trough has been, and will continue to, dominate the east Pacific through the end of the week. This deeper trough has been able to tap into some subtropical moisture, advecting healthy PW values upwards of 0.8" to the northern latitudes. For our area, these PW values are in the 90th percentile for this time of year (which means there is sufficient moisture for some rain to fall). However, models are in good agreement that this system will be moving a cold front through the area fast (in about 12 hours). The system is forecasted to be about 350 miles off the coast Friday, where it stalls and deepens. It then continues eastward and moves onshore Friday night, giving the North Bay areas some lower clouds and light rain starting around sunset. The system will continue to move quickly across the CWA from northwest to southeast, brining rain to most areas early Saturday morning. The cold front should be moving out of the southern parts of Monterey and San Benito counties Saturday morning. Rainfall totals look to be around 0.50"-0.75" for the coastal ranges/hills, 0.25"-0.50" for immediate Bay Area and North Bay, with 0.25" or less elsewhere. Some places might only see 0.10".
This weekend temperatures will have a hard time recovering as we see zonal flow aloft. Near the coast will see upper 50's and the inland areas lower 60's for high temperatures Saturday and Sunday. Northwest winds will remain breezy, with more gusty winds near the coast. Winds will look to calm down slightly Sunday.
Most global models agree on more upper level waves coming our way early next week. As an upper level trough persists over the eastern Pacific for most of next week, more moisture continues to advect northward ahead of a few low pressure systems that look to move along the storm track. This pattern would keep the area cooler than normal, and bring us some more rain potential. We will keep an eye on how things evolve for the coming week.
AVIATION. as of 09:30 AM PST Thursday . For the 18Z TAFs. Lingering cigs at KSTS will continue to thin out late this morning. VFR expected this afternoon and this evening at all terminals. Tonight on the other hand is tricky and lower confidence forecast. Hi-res model guidance suggests a return of some patchy low cigs in the MVFR cat. For now brought some cigs back for the North Bay and Monterey Bay. SF Bay could see some clouds, but will keep them SCT. Tomorrow afternoon into the evening more widespread cloud cover will return as a cold front moves in from the west. Vicinity of KSFO . VFR. Wind light and variable until 22z today then southwest 10 to 20 knots, wind decreasing to south-southwest 10 knots tonight and Friday morning. Scattered clouds possible tomorrow morning with increase mid-high level clouds in the afternoon/evening. SFO Bridge Approach . Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals . VFR through early tonight. MVFR cigs late tonight and early tomorrow. Confidence on returning cigs is medium.
BEACHES. as of 4:19 AM PST Thursday . A long period northwest swell arrives today through Friday bringing an increased risk of sneaker waves, rip currents, long shore currents, and there could be hard breaking surf on steep beaches. There is the potential that these conditions will transition into high surf on Friday. The hazard is for west and northwest facing beaches where caution is advised. Never turn your back to the ocean.
MARINE. as of 09:27 AM PST Thursday . A cold front will approach the region today resulting in increasing southerly winds over the coastal waters. Winds will be strongest north of Point Reyes. A long period northwest swell arrives today continue into Friday. The passing cold front will bring rain later Friday into Saturday morning. Another low pressure system from the northwest will bring more rain early to mid next week.
