Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area 300 PM PST Fri Mar 5 2021

SYNOPSIS. Seasonal temperatures and light southwest winds today. Rain is still looking to move across the area later tonight. Rain totals do not look impressive, as the system will move over the area too fast for much to accumulate. Temperatures will remain cool this weekend and onshore winds breezy Saturday, becoming light Sunday. More chances for rain remaining in the forecast for early next week, keeping temperatures cooler than normal. Warming trend possible next Friday.

DISCUSSION. as of 02:59 PM PST Friday . Friday afternoon has been offering sunny skies and warming temperatures with areas breaking into the 60s. But the next few hours will come with changes, as a cold front approaches the Bay Area. Current radar and satellite imagery show this front moving through northern Mendocino Co, which puts it on track to enter northern Sonoma County before sunset. The line of rain is set to move into the San Francisco Bay before midnight, when the region will start to see more widespread chances. Areas as far south as the Big Sur coast will see some rain into the late night before things begin to clear for Saturday morning. Rainfall rates look to stay light with only brief periods of moderate rainfall. Rain totals are forecast to be between 0.50" and 0.75" on higher elevations along the coast of Sonoma Co. Most North Bay locations as well as San Francisco will stay between 0.25" and 0.5" while the East and South Bay will fall between 0.10" and 0.25. The Santa Cruz Mtns and the Big Sur Coast is also forecasted to fall into the 0.10" to 0.25" range and the areas in between look to stay below the 0.10" mark. The last few rain chances are set to move out of the area early Saturday morning.

Behind this cold front, cooler air will filter into the Bay Area and Central Coast, causing highs to peak in the upper 50s and lower 60s for Saturday and Sunday. Lows will back off into the mid 40s to lower 40s along the coast and into the mid to lower 30s within the interior valleys.

There is strong confidence for a low pressure bringing in more rain late Monday evening and providing chances that could persist until Thursday morning. The official forecast has this low slightly offshore and moving southward along the coast through the mid week of next week. This will provide long-lasting but light to moderate rainfall along coastal areas, with much lighter rain falling for more inland areas. Coastal Mountains will see the higher rainfall amounts with the 3-day totals ranging from 1.00" to 1.50". Lower elevations along the coast look to range from 0.50" to 1.00" during that 3-day period, while areas in the East and South Bay look to stay below 0.25". Snow levels may fall to the 2500' range as this low pressure moves through, causing chances for accumulating snow along higher peaks with the Santa Lucias seeing the best chances for accumulation.

ECMWF and GFS deterministic models and ensemble members are in fair agreement on this low's track, which has it move past the Big Sur coast before turning to the East in SLO Co. The ECMWF members do hint at some moisture wrapping around the low as it move inland, providing the Big Sur coast with longer-lasting rain chances. This doesn't seem to be a likely scenario, but will be something to consider if more ensemble members hint at it.

AVIATION. as of 09:25 AM PST Friday . For the 18Z TAFs. A few low clouds impacted terminals overnight and early this morning, but as of the 18Z VFR conditions prevail. Expecting mainly VFR conditions until later this evening as a cold front bring lower cigs and rain. Timing has been holding steady with impacts to KSTS/KAPC 03-05Z then KSFO/KOAK 05-07Z and locations to the south later in the night and early Saturday morning. Winds will be gusty ahead and with the fropa. Not expecting much lingering of showers behind the front. A few cigs will linger early Saturday, but then transition to VFR with clearing. Vicinity of KSFO . VFR through this evening. Southwesterly winds will increase ahead of and along the frontal boundary today with gusty winds more likely tonight as the front nears. Onset of precip has remained the same 05-07Z along with lowering ceilings. Northwesterly winds will develop in wake of the frontal passage with precipitation ending into Saturday morning. Cigs will gradually lift by mid-morning saturday as well.

SFO Bridge Approach . Similar to KSFO.

Monterey Bay Terminals . VFR through early tonight. Southerly winds will then return as a frontal boundary approaches the region late tonight and brings -ra to the terminals after 06Z Saturday. A few showers may linger early Saturday, but clearing toward the end of the taf.

MARINE. as of 02:59 PM PST Friday . Locally gusty southerly winds will continue as a cold front inches closer to the coast early tonight. The cold front will then move through the coastal waters tonight and early Saturday resulting in gusty winds and periods of rain. A longer period moderate northwest swell will also continue to result in hazardous conditions for small craft through Saturday before subsiding on Sunday. Another low pressure system approaching from the northwest will bring more rain and larger swell early to mid next week.
