Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area 135 PM PST Sun Jan 26 2020

SYNOPSIS. Skies are beginning to clear Sunday afternoon now that the cold front has moved east. Partly cloudy skies with dry conditions will remain Sunday and Monday, though patchy fog is possible on Monday morning. The next chance for light rain looks to be Monday evening into Tuesday morning. However, the rain should be light and be north of the Golden Gate. After that, dry air will dominate and a warming trend will continue through Saturday.

DISCUSSION. as of 01:33 PM PST Sunday . The Bay Area is seeing skies begin to clear behind the cold front. However, there are a few locations south of San Jose that are still receiving spotty light drizzle. Precipitation should end this afternoon as clearer skies and dry air moves in. Cooler temperatures can be expected overnight. A few isolated valleys in the North Bay, East Bay and Southern Monterey county my drop below 40, but nothing near freezing. With plenty of moisture in the area and cooler temperatures, patchy fog in traditional low lying areas is possible Monday morning. Some isolated patchy frost might be possible as well.

A weak upper level ridge builds Sunday and into Monday providing drier conditions. Quickly following on Monday evening, a weak short wave trough moves over the Bay Area and travels eastward on Tuesday. This system will provide the lift necessary for another round of precipitation. Models have represented it as much weaker than this weekends short wave, so lower accumulations are expected. Additionally, it does not appear to be a deep trough; therefore, it is only forecast to bring precipitation north of the Golden Gate at this time.

By Wednesday, a deep upper level ridge grows over the Bay Area as high pressure builds over the southeastern Pacific Ocean. The increasing amount of subsidence will provide drier conditions around the region and allow for a small warming trend for temperatures through Saturday. Sunday and Monday next week looks to be the next pattern shift as models are showing the next trough to appear. It is still to far in time to say it will be completely dry, but it does look like cold air advection will be associated with it which can drive cooler, if not colder, temperatures to the region.

AVIATION. as of 9:47 AM PST Sunday . For 18Z TAFs. A weak cool front moved across the Bay Area this morning. Behind this front, winds will shift westerly and clouds will gradually decrease. Mostly clear skies expected by Monday morning.

Vicinity of KSFO . MVFR cigs becoming VFR by 21Z. Winds will be westerly 12 knots or less. VFR overnight.

SFO Bridge Approach . Similar to KSFO.

Monterey Bay Terminals . IFR cigs until 20Z or so. Light west winds. MVFR overnight with cigs and patchy fog.

MARINE. as of 01:33 PM PST Sunday . Locally breezy northwest winds expected today behind the weak frontal boundary that moved through this morning. The strongest winds will be along the Big Sur coast tonight into Monday. A long period west to northwest swell is arriving today as well. An additional long period northwest swell will arrive by early next week.

NOTE: East coast views moved to GEOS-16. They are experimental and not well supported by NOAA so they may not be correct so be warned. This change required redoing a large amount of the GOES code. If the image you are expecting is not showing, please let me know. You may need to use the EDIT function to update your location.

There are five sources. 1) Documents and manuals from a variety of sources. These have not been checked for accuracy and in many cases have not even been read by anyone associated with L-36.com. I have no idea of they are useful or accurate, I leave that to the reader. 2) Articles others have written and submitted. It is not checked for accuracy either by anyone at L-36.com or by the source which is typically the US Government. See the NOAA web site for their disclaimer. Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
