Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area 358 AM PST Sat Jan 18 2020

SYNOPSIS. High pressure building over the West Coast will result in dry and mild weather conditions through the weekend. Rain chances return late Monday into Tuesday. Mostly dry conditions are then expected for the remainder of next week.

DISCUSSION. As of 3:46 AM PST Saturday . Abundant high cloudiness has moved over much of the state, thus hampering widespread fog formation for now. Currently, Santa Rosa is the only airport reporting fog, with under 2 miles visibility as of 3 AM. The high clouds are also acting as an insulating blanket as current temperature trends are running warmer than 24 hours ago. The development of patchy dense fog is still certainly possible through about mid morning.

Besides possible night and morning fog, there are no other weather concerns through the weekend. An upper ridge over California will bring warmer temperatures to the area through the weekend, with mid 50s to lower 60s expected. The upper ridge is forecast to shift to our east by Monday, allowing a system to spread rain chances across northern California from late Monday through Tuesday. The bulk of the rain is expected north of I-80, but rain chances are expected through most of our area through Tuesday. An additional element is a weak disturbance, located to the south of the primary system, that is expected to tap into subtropical moisture. The 00Z GFS shows this weak disturbance dissipating well offshore. The 00Z ECMWF, tracks this disturbance to the southeast, but still adds the possibility of some light precipitation to Monterey and San Benito counties late Monday, before the main system to the north even arrives.

Upper level ridging is then forecast to redevelop by the middle of next week, and generally dry conditions are expected for the remainder of the week. However, a weak system may brush the northern portion of our area around Thursday or Thursday night. These weather systems over the next seven days will be approaching from the west and will therefore be relatively warm compared to recent systems. This will mean snow levels will remain mostly above 5000 feet during these precipitation events.

AVIATION. as of 3:58 AM PST Saturday . Patchy fog will occur through the morning across the North Bay Valleys with VFR conditions elsewhere. Have not seen much low cloud or fog development across the East Bay near the delta so removed mention of lower vis across the Bay Area terminals. High clouds will continue to stream over the area through tonight. High pressure over the Great Basin and the region will result in continued offshore winds today. Winds speeds will generally be less than 10 kt except in terrain enhanced areas such as the Salinas Valley. Winds this afternoon near the coast are expected to become briefly onshore before becoming offshore this evening.

Vicinity of KSFO . VFR. ENE winds around 5-8 kt expected to continue through the day. A few low clouds will occur through the morning but are not expected to expand in coverage.

SFO Bridge Approach . Similar to KSFO.

Monterey Bay Terminals . VFR. Southeast winds around 10-13 kt will continue this morning at KSNS with generally light winds at KMRY. Winds becoming onshore around 5 kt this afternoon.

MARINE. as of 3:35 AM PST Saturday . High pressure over the Great Basin will bring light to moderate offshore winds to the coastal waters and in the bays through Sunday. Winds will turn southerly and increase by Monday morning ahead of an approaching frontal system. A moderate northwest swell will arrive late Saturday and Sunday while a larger northwest swell arrives the middle of next week.

MTR WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. Tday. NONE.

NOTE: East coast views moved to GEOS-16. They are experimental and not well supported by NOAA so they may not be correct so be warned. This change required redoing a large amount of the GOES code. If the image you are expecting is not showing, please let me know. You may need to use the EDIT function to update your location.
