Synopsis for the central california coast and bays including the Monterey bay..Greater farallones...and cordell bank national marine sanctuaries... Gusty northwest winds continuing over the coastal waters and gusty west winds each afternoon and evening over the bays into early next week. Strong northwest winds will generate steep fresh swell resulting in hazardous seas conditions, particularly for smaller vessels. The long-period southerly swell prevails through the weekend as well causing occasional breaking waves over nearshore shoals and strong currents along the coast, especially near points and headlands.

Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area 1037 PM PDT Sat Jul 4 2020

SYNOPSIS. High pressure will remain over the region through the remainder of the weekend resulting in continued very warm and dry conditions inland. Temperatures are forecast to cool on Monday as onshore flow increases and the marine layer likely returns. Seasonable temperatures are forecast for most of next week, with warming likely late in the week and into next weekend.

DISCUSSION. as of 8:50 PM PDT Saturday . Robust warming occurred across most of our region today as drier air aloft mixed to the surface, producing sunny skies all the way to the ocean. Inland high temperatures today were anywhere from 8 to 18 degrees warmer than Friday's highs. Light onshore flow limited coastal warming to about 7 degrees or less.

Skies remain clear across our entire forecast area this evening. Although the Fort Ord Profiler indicates a marine inversion persists at slightly less than 1000 feet off the surface, the air in the marine layer is too dry to support fog/cloud formation. Based on latest local WRF, boundary layer RH may increase enough overnight for patchy coastal fog and low clouds, but most areas are expected to remain clear.

A broad upper ridge that extends from the Midwest WSW to southern California is forecast to hold firm through the remainder of the weekend, and produce another day of very warm and dry conditions across our inland areas. Models indicate a slight increase in onshore flow by Sunday afternoon and this will likely result in a few degrees of cooling, especially near the ocean and bays and in the coastal valleys. But inland valleys and hills will likely be about as warm tomorrow as today.

A shortwave trough, currently located off the coast of British Columbia, is forecast to dig south to near the northern California coast by Monday. This will result in cooler temperatures for most areas on Monday as onshore flow increases and as moisture increases in a deepening marine layer. Inland areas are forecast to cool the most on Monday, by about 10 degrees. Temperatures are then forecast to hold near seasonal averages, or slightly below, on Tuesday and Wednesday as a weak trough lingers over northern California.

Warming is likely late next week and into the following weekend as an upper ridge strengthens over the Desert Southwest and expands westward over California. At least this would be the outcome if the ECMWF verifies. The GFS is less bullish building the upper ridge and therefore indicates only slight warming late in the extended.

AVIATION. As of 10:37 PM PDT Saturday . For 06Z TAFs. It's VFR at all terminals. VFR is forecast at the terminals with exception of patchy fog and stratus /LIFR-IFR/ redeveloping on the immediate coastline late tonight and Sunday morning. Guidance continues to trend toward stronger onshore wind gusts Sunday and Monday afternoon and evening. Any Sunday morning fog and/or stratus patches should mix out for VFR in the afternoon.

Vicinity of KSFO . VFR. Gusty west wind developing Sunday afternoon and evening with gusts nearing 35 knots.

SFO Bridge Approach . Similar to KSFO.

Monterey Bay Terminals . VFR, onshore winds 5 to 10 knots. Patchy fog and stratus /LIFR-IFR/ early Sunday morning otherwise VFR until Sunday evening when patchy LIFR-IFR redeveloping. Sunday afternoon and early evening west winds 10 to 15 knots.

MARINE. as of 10:32 PM PDT Saturday .

Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases.
