Synopsis for the central california coast and bays including the Monterey bay..Greater farallones...and cordell bank national marine sanctuaries... Northwest winds will ease along the coast and over the southern waters today. Winds will also gradually turn southerly across the inner coastal waters today and Saturday. Locally stronger winds will persist over the northern outer waters into the weekend.

Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area 316 AM PDT Fri Aug 7 2020

SYNOPSIS. A warming trend is expected from Friday through the weekend. The marine layer will compress but little intraday change in temperatures near the coast.

DISCUSSION. as of 3:15 AM PDT Friday . An upper level trough over the Pacific Northwest has swung inland. A weak upper low has broken off the southern end of the trough and will be over the area today. As a result temperatures will be close to what they were Thursday except for a few degrees warming over the inland areas. The marine layer started to develop last night but has mixed out some this morning leaving only patchy low clouds in the Bay Area. Hi-res models indicate clouds spreading into the central SF Bay and the South Bay during the morning hours but to a lesser extent before burning off to the coast late morning.

The upper trough fills in on Saturday and Sunday and an upper level ridge from the eastern Pacific noses into the Oregon coast. The marine layer is forecast to compress which could result in increasing areas of fog along the coast. A warming trend is expected for the weekend with highs on Sunday warming to above normal ranging from the mid 60s to low 70s at the coast to the mid to upper 90s in the warmest inland locations.

Temperatures will begin a slow cooling trend early to middle next week as an upper trough moving into British Columbia deepens along the west coast.

AVIATION. As of 10:40 PM PDT Thursday . for 06z TAFs. MVFR/IFR ceilings expected at all coastal TAF locations overnight, with a potential for MVFR ceilings at inland TAF locations for a few hours around sunrise. VFR conditions expected to return at all locations by 17-18Z Friday, except at KMRY where MVFR conditions may persist until 20Z. Typical afternoon and evening seabreeze winds expected.

Vicinity of KSFO . MVFR ceilings through 16-17Z on Friday, with a potential for IFR ceilings 12-16Z. VFR from 17Z through the remainder of Friday. West winds around 10 kt increasing to 16G22kt by late afternoon.

SFO Bridge Approach . Similar to KSFO.

Monterey Bay Terminals . MVFR/IFR ceilings overnight, persisting until 20Z Friday, with a potential for MVFR visibility for a few hours around sunrise. Light to moderate westerly winds.

MARINE. as of 02:16 AM PDT Friday . Moderate to locally breezy northwest winds will persist tonight across the waters. These winds will generate steep fresh swell resulting in hazardous seas conditions for smaller vessels. Winds will ease along the coast and over the southern waters on Friday. Winds will also gradually turn southerly across the inner coastal waters Friday and Saturday. Locally stronger winds will persist over the northern outer waters into the weekend.
