Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area 1031 PM PDT Wed Sep 15 2021

SYNOPSIS. Cooler but seasonable conditions will prevail through the end of the week. A deepening marine layer will move inland each night with seasonably warm weather near the coast and bays. As a trough approaches the West Coast this weekend, temperatures will dip below normal. Rain is looking more likely late Saturday into Sunday. Offshore wind event may be looming Monday into Tuesday with warming temperatures.

DISCUSSION. as of 08:44 PM PDT Wednesday . Afternoon temperatures were 10 to as much as 20 deg F cooler compared to yesterday as a well-defined marine layer and increased onshore flow have returned to the region. This has also allowed for low clouds (stratus) to rapidly spread inland this evening with widespread coverage in the lower elevations likely through Thursday morning. This said, the ongoing short-term forecast remains on track with no updates anticipated this evening. All attention turns to the continued cooling trend expected for this upcoming weekend along with the chance of light precipitation from the Santa Cruz Mountains northward. For complete details on this, please see the previous forecast discussion below.

PREV DISCUSSION. as of 03:06 PM PDT Wednesday . Visible satellite shows stratus blanketing the coastal waters, with the SF Peninsula and most of the coastline still under low clouds. The deeper marine layer, now around 1800 ft, and increased marine influence has brought notably cooler air to the region. The most stark difference from 24 hrs ago is in Sonoma County. Sites around Santa Rosa are reporting temps in the upper 60s, which is 15 to 20 degrees cooler. Sites in Napa County and East Bay are 10 to 15 degrees cooler in general. Forecast MaxTs were adjusted downward a bit based on these trends. Still expecting to see 80s in interior spots this afternoon and potentially low 90s in southern interior areas.

Further cooling is forecast for tomorrow as a weak shortwave trough moves through. This should drop temps a few to several degrees below normal across the CWA. Can also expect continued deepening of the marine layer and more low clouds through the morning and into the early afternoon. Temps will moderate somewhat on Friday, before the next more impactful system approaches the PacNW Saturday and Sunday.

Latest guidance has increasing rainfall potential to our north, with northern areas of our CWA right on the periphery. Models show good moisture with this system, with PWATs nearing 1.5in around the Bay Area, which is about twice the climatological mean for the date (>90%). Unfortunately, the bulk of the precip is forecast to fall from Mendocino County northward. Coastal Sonoma and Marin counties have decent chances of seeing wetting rains (>0.1 in) but further south and inland, POPs diminish rapidly. Have kept POPs at chance levels from northern Monterey Bay through North Bay, with slight chance POPs further south.

As the trough moves inland Monday over the Great Basin and a ridge builds over the EPac, a tight pressure gradient will setup over CA with some strong offshore winds possible Monday night into Tuesday in the N Bay/E Bay hills. Still too early to give any precise wind forecast at this time, but given our extremely dry fuel conditions at this time, any winds are problematic. Possible mitigating factor will be the cooler conditions, better RH relief and possible precip for the wildfire areas later this week.

AVIATION. as of 10:31 PM PDT Wednesday . For the 06z TAFs. Isolated MVFR conditions but mostly IFR expected through the overnight hours. Cigs range between 700 to 1100 feet. While some lowering may still occur, only sheltered terminals have a chance for LIFR level cigs. Coastal terminals have a slight chance for patchy drizzle early Thursday morning. Late clearing to VFR Thursday afternoon with onshore seabreeze developing. A mixed bag of MVFR/IFR forecast for Thursday night as the marine layer continues to gradually deepen.

Vicinity of KSFO . Still currently VFR, but IFR cigs expected overnight holding on until 18Z. Skies improve to VFR Thursday afternoon with onshore winds around 15 knots. As winds subside into Thursday night, any low cloud accumulation will be late in the TAF period, with the current projection of MVFR cigs, but they will hover just above IFR levels.

KSFO Bridge Approach . Similar to KSFO.

Monterey Bay . IFR through the night. Lowering vis possible on approach, but there is low confidence in dense fog near the terminal. Patchy coastal drizzle possible early Thursday morning. A return to VFR late in the morning with a traditional onshore seabreeze in the afternoon. Early return for MVFR/IFR conditions Thursday night.

MARINE. as of 09:18 PM PDT Wednesday . Northwest winds through late week, gusty especially across the northern coastal waters. A cold front approaches late in the week and weekend with a chance of showers. Wind driven seas continuing along with a small, long period southerly swell through the forecast period.
